Monarchs Recall Welch and Steckel

Reading, PA – The Reading Royals, affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and AHL's Manchester Monarchs, have announced that forwards David Steckel and Dan Welch have been recalled by the Manchester Monarchs.

Steckel, 22, has appeared in nine games with the Royals this season. He leads the Royals with eight points (3-5=8), and has two penalty minutes. Selected by the Kings in the first-round (30th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Steckel, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound native of Westbend, Wisconsin, has not appeared in a Monarchs game this season. The Monarchs loaned Steckel, a rookie out of Ohio State University, to the Royals on October 18. Welch, 23, has appeared in four games with the Royals this season, recording five points (3-3=6) and has posted a +5 rating. Selected by the Kings in the eighth-round (245th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Welch, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound native of Hastings, Minnesota, has also appeared in two games for the Monarchs this season, recording one assist (0-1=1). Welch, loaned by the Monarchs to the Royals on November 1, has nine goals, 25 points (9-16=25) and 40 penalty minutes in 75 career AHL games with the Monarchs. The Reading Royals are entering their fourth season in Reading, Pennsylvania after relocating from Columbus, Ohio. The Royals enjoyed their first Kelly Cup playoff appearance last season, claiming the Northern Division Title and were one win away from qualifying for the Kelly Cup Finals. The Royals and the City of Reading are proud to be hosting the 13th annual ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition presented by Coors Light on January 25 and 26.

The Royals host a pair of games this week. Reading battles Peoria for the first time this season, a rematch of last season's Northern Division Finals series. It's Voices Hockey Night in Reading with students able to enter the game for just $5 with a valid student ID. Friday when Reading tangles with South Carolina, Captial Blue Cross is handing out Royals ice scrapers to the first 2,000 fans in attendance. Both games face off at 7:05 p.m.
