Gulls Fall to Bakersfield, 4-1

San Diego Gulls News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Bakersfield Condors' recipe for success so far this season has been their power play.

Well... they were cooking again Saturday night, scoring three times with the man advantage and beating the San Diego Gulls 4-1 at Centennial Garden.

Killing penalties wasn't the only thing the Gulls had trouble with. They also had to deal with two ex-San Diego fan favorites, Ashlee Langdone and Kevin St. Jacques. Langdone, who ranks second all-time in franchise penalty minutes, scored what proved to be the game-winner and added an assist. St. Jacques, fifth all-time on the Gulls' scoring list, chipped in with two assists.

Bakersfield (7-0-1) remains first in the West Division, one point ahead of the Idaho Steelheads, who defeated the Florida Everblades Saturday. The Gulls (4-4-1) have now lost two straight and are six points behind the front-running Condors.

Bakersfield, which entered the day with the league's best power play, took advantage of an early Gulls penalty and got on the scoreboard first, 8:10 into the first period. Veteran Paul Rosebush got the tally, taking a pass from Lars Peder Nagel and ripping a slap shot over the out-stretched glove of Trevor Koenig.

Darren Clark, San Diego's leading scorer, answered at 11:19 of the first on a Gulls power play. Evgueni Nourislamov almost coughed-up the puck in his own zone, but maintained possession and whipped a cross-ice feed to Clark, who beat Randy Petruk.

The Condors notched another power-play marker 7:41 into the second, thanks to a play made by Langdone and St. Jacques. Langdone scored it on a breakaway, skating in all alone and beating Koenig with a back-hander. St. Jacques set it up, grabbing the puck at his own blue line and finding Langdone wide-open behind the San Diego defense.

Brad Mehalko banged in Bakersfield's third power-play goal of the game at 14:02 of the second, converting on a rebound from St. Jacques' original shot. Luis Tremblay, along with St. Jacques, earned his second assist of night on the play.

Offense went to bed the remainder of the game, as the Condors went into a defensive shell. Mehalko, however, added an empty-netter with 54 seconds left – assisted by Langdone – to officially seal it.

Even though Bakersfield controlled the play throughout the game, the Gulls did get their fair share of chances. That didn't matter to Petruk, whose rock-solid goaltending upped his record to a perfect 6-0-0.

Notes: The Gulls have scored 22 goals in their four wins this season. They have scored only five goals in their five losses (which includes one shootout loss)... Darren Clark is now riding a career high eight-game point streak, second longest in the ECHL this season... The Blue and Orange came into the game having killed 32 of their previous 35 penalties... Chris Lynch made his Gulls debut Saturday after being acquired from the Reading Royals... Mathieu Chouinard (hip) and Sylvain Deschatelets (wrist) both remain on the injured list... Sean O'Connor remains with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks...

The Gulls and Condors meet again Wednesday at the Sports Arena, with game time set for 7:05 p.m. It will be the second "Wacky Wednesday" of the season and the first "Pooch Party." THAT MEANS ALL FANS IN ATTENDANCE ARE INVITED TO BRING THEIR DOG TO THE GAME!
