Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons poured a season-high 48 shots on goal but still trailed on four separate occasions, not taking a lead until Dan Tessier scored a power play goal with 1:29 remaining in regulation to lift the Falcons over the Victoria Salmon Kings, 6-4, at Save Mart Center in front of a crowd of 4,870.
Despite out-shooting the Salmon Kings, 17-3, during the opening 20 minutes, Fresno found themselves trailing, 2-1. Victoria sandwiched goals from Jeremy Cheyne and Ryan Watson around a Curtis Sheptak power play goal for the Falcons at 7:42 of the first.
The Falcons tied the game for a second time at 5:26 of the middle period when Shawn Heaphy found David Brisson back door for an easy finish. The Salmon Kings leapt back in front as Blue Bennefield hit a streaking Jason Hegberg, who banged the puck home to give his club a 3-2 advantage at 9:40. Fresno tied the game for a third time after Charles Simard beat a man through the right circle and fired past goaltender Jason Stone's blocker side at 17:51. Only :26 seconds elapsed before Victoria took their fourth one-goal lead of the game off a blazing slapshot from Rob Voltera from just outside the Falcons blue-line.
Having outshot the Salmon Kings, 33-11, through two periods, Fresno still looked up at a 4-3 deficit entering the third. Simon Mangos, playing his first game as a pro after being acquired by the Falcons earlier in the week from the Reading Royals, ripped a blistering slapshot of his own from just inside the Victoria blue-line at 6:56 of the final period to tie the game at four. That set the stage for Tessier's game-winner. With the Falcons skating on the power play, Simard sent a slapshot toward Stone, and on his second whack at a rebound, the Fresno captain chipped the puck into the net at 18:31.
Shawn Heaphy's empty-net goal with just under four seconds to play sealed the 6-4 victory in which Fresno out-shot the visitors, 48-21. Brett Jaeger picked up the win in goal for the Falcons after relieving Simon Lajeunesse entering the third period and stopping all 10 shots he faced.
The come-from-behind effort marks Fresno's first back-to-back victories of the season following Tuesday's 4-1 decision over the Toledo Storm, giving them a record of 3-6-1 on the year. The Falcons head to Long Beach to face the Ice Dogs on Friday, Nov. 19, before returning home to host the San Diego Gulls on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Save Mart Center at 7 p.m.
Tickets are on sale for the game on Nov. 20 against the Gulls for as low as $8 per seat and may be purchased directly at Save Mart Center's box office and all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 485-TIXS (8497) or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
