March 18, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Atlantic City, NJ â The Peoria Rivermen continued their regular season dominance of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, beating them 4-2 on Friday night in front of 1,868 at Historic Boardwalk Hall. After losing the season-opening matchup between the teams on November 5 at Carver Arena, it was Peoria's sixth straight victory against Atlantic City this season.
The Boardwalk Bullies cut the Rivermen lead to one for the second time in the game early in the third period. After Rivermen goaltender Alfie Michaud stopped Atlantic City's Jason Notermann on a point-blank chance, the rebound caromed out to the middle of the slot, where Fahey rifled the puck over Michaud, who was down on the ice after the initial save. It was Fahey's seventh goal of the season.
The Rivermen added the insurance tally with 41 seconds remaining in the game. Tyler Rennette maneuvered the puck into the Atlantic City zone on right wing, where three Boardwalk Bullies players converged on him. His eventual shot deflected off the leg of an Atlantic City player to the high slot, where Randy Rowe launched in his 19th marker of the year.
Rennette finished the night with the No. 1 Star, and Michaud collected the No. 3 Star.
Peoria (32-21-7, 71 points) improved to 3-3-0 through six games of its grueling five-city, seven-game, nine-day road trip and to 13-14-2 on the road. The Rivermen are now 25-9-4 in the 38 games following the Christmas Holiday. First-place Atlantic City (35-19-8, 78 points) had its two-game winning streak snapped in the loss. The Boardwalk Bullies, who will remain in first, dropped to 16-9-5 at home this season.
Michaud (23-10-4) turned away 30 of 32 Atlantic City chances in the victory. Atlantic City's Trevor Koenig (22-11-4) stopped 23 of 26 shots in the loss.
The Rivermen opened the scoring at 7:30 of the first period. Brian McCullough stole the puck just outside the Atlantic City zone, carrying it on his backhand down the right side of the slot. McCullough, who had two steps on the Atlantic City defense, was able to flick a backhander inside the left goal post for his team-leading 33rd tally of the year. It was McCullough's 11th marker in the last 13 games, which includes a seven-goal, seven-game goal-scoring streak.
Russ Guzior's third goal in the last two games gave Peoria a 2-0 advantage. Travis Rycroft broke down the right side of the Atlantic City end, cut to the low slot, split the Boardwalk Bullies defense and sent a backhand chance on net that Koenig stopped, but the rebound came to Guzior, who snapped the puck inside the right goal post from the right corner of the goal crease. It was Guzior's sixth goal of the season.
The Boardwalk Bullies would not be denied, finally connecting with 35 seconds remaining in the first. On a goalmouth scramble in front of Michaud with Derek Edwardson and Paul Caponigri whacking at the puck, Caponigri was able to stuff his 14th marker of the season inside the left goal post underneath an outstretched Michaud.
The Rivermen grabbed their two-goal lead back at 8:18 of the middle stanza on the power play. Trevor Byrne, stationed at the right point, quickly shoveled a pass to Chad Starling at the center point, where Starling tapped the puck over to the left face-off circle for Rennette. Rennette wasted no time launching his 17th marker of the season past Koenig.
On Saturday, March 19, the Rivermen complete the five-city, seven-game, nine-day road trip by visiting Wheeling, W. Va., again to face off against the Nailers. Game time is 6:30 p.m. CT.
