San Diego Looks To Gain Ground In Standings As Homestand Continues

SAN DIEGO — It's just another crucial game for the San Diego Gulls, as they attempt to gain ground in their push to capture a playoff spot. Tonight the Gulls host the Long Beach Ice Dogs at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena, a team they've dominated the last three seasons.

SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Ice Dogs have met five times this season with San Diego holding a 4-1-0 series edge. The two teams will clash two more times in the regular season. San Diego and Long Beach met 10 times last season with the Gulls holding a 9-0-1 edge.

San Diego owns the all-time series match-up, posting a 40-11-2 record against its West Division rival. The Gulls are 22-3-1 all-time against the Ice Dogs at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena. San Diego is unbeaten in 27 of its last 28 head-to-head meetings against Long Beach (26-1-1), dating back to October 2002...

LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (MARCH 11 @ LBH): Joel Stepp scored both goals in regulation and goaltender Eddy Ferhi stopped all four attempts in the shootout, leading the Gulls to a hard-fought 3-2 win in Long Beach. San Diego had a 2-0 lead with eight minutes left in the third period, but the Ice Dogs came storming back, sending the contest to the extra frame. In the shootout period, Curtis Brown and Sylvain Deschatelets scored for the Gulls. Ferhi stopped Long Beach's Marco Rosa, Bill Lindsay, Michael Lambert and Chris Kenady.

GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (31-23-6) enter the day sixth in the West Division, seven points behind the Fresno Falcons for the fourth and final playoff spot... They are six points back of the fifth-place Idaho Steelheads, who are idle today... The Gulls have a game in hand on both Fresno and Idaho... San Diego has won three of its last four games, outscoring its opponents 10-5... The Gulls are 19-6-3 at home, but just 12-17-3 on the road this season... They have outscored their opponents 105-75 at home, but have been outscored 101-73 on the road... The Blue and Orange are 10-12-2 in their last 24 games... Since the all-star break, they are 5-2-1 at home and 5-9-1 on the road (10-11-2 overall)...

OTHER NOTES: San Diego is 22-3-1 when scoring four-plus goals in a game, but just 9-20-5 when scoring three or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponent four times since the all-star break (23 games)... They are just 15 for 111 on the power play (13.5 percent) since the all-star break... Ferhi has stopped 175 of his last 185 shots (.946 save percentage)... He is 3-0-0 with a 1.89 goals-against average and .940 save percentage against the Ice Dogs this season... San Diego is just 1 for 21 on the power play against Long Beach this season (4.8 percent)...

LONG BEACH UPDATE: Long Beach (35-18-8) begins the day third in the West Division, seven points behind the first-place Alaska Aces and three points back of the second-place Bakersfield Condors... The Ice Dogs, however, have one game in hand on both Alaska and Bakersfield... Long Beach is three points ahead of the fourth-place Falcons and 10 points in front of the Gulls... The Ice Dogs have only won once in their last eight games (1-4-3)... Prior to that stretch they were 25-6-3 in their last 34 games... Evan Cheverie leads the club with 55 points (21g, 34a), which is tied for 16th in the ECHL... Long Beach is 6 for 15 on the power play against the Gulls this season (40 percent)...

TRANSACTIONS: Evgueni Nourislamov was activated from the injured list today after missing the last 23 games with a broken thumb... David Karpa was placed on the seven-day injured list Sunday with a sore groin... Nick Ganga (knee) also remains out of the lineup...
