Peoria Rivermen News Release
After allowing the first two goals of the game, the Peoria Rivermen rallied to beat the Lake Erie Monsters, 4-3, in the shootout on Thursday night at Quicken Loans Arena. The win extended their winning streak to a season-high four games. Ben Bishop earned his third straight win, and second straight shootout win, stopping 33 shots in regulation and overtime and then all five shots in the shootout.
Peoria has now earned at least a point in seven of their eight road games this season, with a 5-1-1-1 record away from home. They have started their season-long nine game road trip with three straight wins.
The Monsters were able to convert on their opening power play of the game at the 4:04 mark of the first period. Greg Mauldin found a rebound in front of Ben Bishop off of a Tyson Barrie shot from the point and was able to put it in for his third of the year. Just 1:36 later, Hugh Jessiman's fourth goal of the season gave the Monsters a two goal advantage. Justin Mercier set up Jessiman just to the side of the net for a tap in.
Brett Sterling countered less than 2 minutes later, with his team leading 10th goal of the year, at the 7:09 mark. Derek Nesbitt put a perfect pass through the slot for Sterling as the two broke in on a two-on-one.
Anthony Nigro tied the game at the 16:43 mark of the second on an unassisted goal. His backhand shot from the right circle deflected off the blocker of Cedrick Desjardins and through his legs for his fifth of the season.
The Rivermen took their first lead of the game a power play to open the third period. Cade Fairchild's shot from the point was stopped by Desjardins, but Cracknell smacked the rebound out of mid-air and into the cage at the 1:45 mark of the third.
David van der Gulik tied the game at 9:09 as he banked a pass in off the skate of Brennan Evans.
Peoria had a chance to win it in overtime when van der Gulik was whistled for holding the stick at 3:53 to set up the Rivermen for just over a minute of 4-on-3 time. Desjardins made two saves to get the game into a shootout.
Nesbitt was Peoria's first shooter and his tally stood as lone goal as Bishop improved to 2-0 in shootouts. He has now stopped nine of 10 shooters this season.
The Rivermen led in the shot department 38-36 while going 1-for-6 on the man advantage. The Rivermen penalty kill was 5-for-6.
The Rivermen will play the Monsters again Saturday night in Lake Erie at 6:30 p.m. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
