Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, IL (February 14, 2007) - The Peoria Rivermen avenged their 2-1 overtime loss to the San Antonio Rampage Sunday evening with a 3-1 victory Wednesday night in front of 2,955 at Carver Arena, finishing their four-game home stand with seven out of a possible eight points.
Peoria (26-19-2-2, 56 pts), who improved to 5-1-1-0 against the Rampage this season and finished the home portion of the season series 4-0-1-0, opened the scoring at 6:43 of the first frame on center Konstantin Zakharov's seventh marker of the season. Zakharov, who had been scratched in five of the past six games, was skating toward the net through the right face-off circle and attempted to flip the puck on net. The shot was deflected by a San Antonio defenseman behind the goal out to Zakharov, who was low in the right slot, picked it up and chipped it off the back of Rampage netminder David LeNeveu and into the cage.
The Rampage (23-29-1-3, 50 pts) tied the game 1-1 at 1:33 of the second session on a rare 4-on-3 power play opportunity. Defenseman Keith Yandle held the puck at the top of the left face-off circle, cocked and fired a blast that was redirected in the slot by center Jeff Taffe, who tipped the puck past the left skate of Rivermen goalie Jason Bacashihua. The goal was Taffe's 18th tally of the year and was the first power play goal that San Antonio has scored against the Rivermen this season in 42 chances.
At 15:52 of the second stanza, San Antonio had a breakaway chance that was stoned by Bacashihua, who laid on the ice for a couple minutes after he was knocked down by the shooter but was able to stay in the game.
Shortly following that, at 16:07, the Rivermen regained the lead on defenseman Jamie Rivers' first goal with Peoria. Right wing Mike Glumac beautifully side-stepped a Rampage defenseman along the right-wing boards at the hash marks then found Rivers streaking through the left face-off circle, where he snapped a shot past a diving LeNeveu.
Peoria added another goal at 9:03 of the last stanza on left wing Charles Linglet's team-leading 23rd goal of the season. Center Yan Stastny threw the puck into the zone and Zakharov beat out a Rampage defenseman for the puck behind the net and to the left of LeNeveu. Zakharov dropped a back pass to Linglet, who, while trying to gain firm possession of the puck, had his stick kicked forward by Yandle as he was trying to stop it, chipping the puck over LeNeveu's left pad.
The Rivermen will head north on Friday, February 16 to face-off against the Milwaukee Admirals, who as of Wednesday night are third in the West Division with 61 points but have played six more games than Peoria. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Bradley Center.
