Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Manitoba Moose scored two goals in the first minute of the game and rode the early lead to a 4-1 win over the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights on Wednesday at the MTS Centre. The win gave the Moose a sweep of the two-game series. Manitoba won 4-2 on Monday.
The game took an early ugly turn for the Knights when Jason Jaffray took advantage of a miscommunication in the Knights' defensive end. He stole the puck behind Curtis McElhinney's net and banked the puck in off McElhinney's skate for a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds into the game.
That lead ballooned to 2-0 just seven seconds later when Lee Goren ripped a shot past McElhinney from the right wing.
The Knights got into penalty trouble later in the period. With two men in the box, Jaffray tucked in a rebound of his own shot to make it 3-0 after one period.
The Moose stretched their lead to 4-0 late in the second period. Off a scramble in front of the Knights' net, Colby Genoway poked in his ninth goal of the year.
But just 1:27 later, the Knights finally got on the scoreboard. Andrei Taratukhin got free down the left wing and threw a pinpoint pass to the front of the Manitoba net. Native Winnipegger Dustin Boyd knocked it in to make it 4-1 after two periods.
Neither team would find the net in the third period. The best chance came on a breakaway by Genoway. He was stopped by McElhinney.
The Knights are now 30-18-3-1. They have now lost three straight games.
Three Stars: 1. Colby Genoway (MAN) - 1 goal, 1 assist; 2. Jason Jaffray (MAN) - 2 goals; 3. Yannick Tremblay (MAN) - 1 assist
