Blazers Stopped in Mississippi on Saturday Night

Mississippi became the first CHL team to defeat the Oklahoma City Blazers in regulation time this season, stopping the Blazers 3-2 at the DeSoto Civic Center Saturday night. Bobby Chaumont scored a pair of goals for the RiverKings, including the game-winner at 2:57 of the third period for the lead that became the final score. Jeff Alcombrack also netted a goal for the RiverKings, who evened their season record at 6-6-0 with the victory. Oklahoma City fell to 9-1-2 with the loss. Kevin Beech improved his season mark to 6-5-0 with a 21-save performance at the crease for Mississippi. The win was also the second of the year against the division-leading Blazers, as Mississippi won in Oklahoma City on October 24th.

OKC Wins Series Opener at DCC Friday Night

The Oklahoma City Blazers opened the two-game series against the RiverKings at the DeSoto Civic Center last Friday night with a 3-1 victory. OKC goaltender Andy Franck stood out in the contest, stopping 34 of 35 shots on goal in gaining his ninth win of the season. Dallas Costanzo tied the game for the RiverKings in the second period with his third goal of the year, assisted by Andrew Lackner and Matt Pierce at 7:34 of the second period of play, but that turned out to be the only offense the home team could apply. Kevin Beech stopped 17 shots but allowed three goals in the crease for Mississippi. It was the first win for Oklahoma City in two meetings against the RiverKings.

Chaumont Takes Over RK Goal Scoring Lead

With his two goals Saturday night, RiverKings' forward Bobby Chaumont took over the goal scoring lead on the team roster from Louis Dumont. Chaumont also moved into second place on the team points list with the two red-lighters against the Blazers Saturday night. For the season, the 6-foot, 200-pound native of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada has seven goals and 11 points. Three of the seven goals have come on the power play and his last one Saturday night against Oklahoma City became the game-winner. Producing with a man advantage in other ways, Chaumont also has assisted on four other power play tallies for the RiverKings. In addition, Chaumont has moved into third place in the CHL three-star standings with 15 points (three first-star awards).

Dumont, Nelson and Summers Assisting

When it comes to assists on the ice, look for Louis, Jeff, and Matt, as in Dumont, Nelson and Summers. Each player has eight assists for the season, with Dumont and Nelson assisting on eight RiverKings' goals, and Summers helping out on five (the first three came when he started the season with the Laredo Bucks).

M & M's Are A Plus

It's Markusen and Marshall at the top of the sheet for plus-minus stats, as defensemen Joe Markusen and Dane Marshall each have a plus-five for the season. Marshall ranks fourth in the CHL for plus-minus among rookies. Both players are in their first season in Mississippi, and Marshall is in his first professional hockey season, having played at the University of Southern Maine last year. Markusen has been in pro hockey since the 2004-05 season and has experience playing in the ECHL, UHL, and IHL before starting in the CHL this season with Mississippi.

Simoes among League PIM Leaders

David Simoes is second in the CHL in penalty minutes, accumulating 74 PIMs entering this week's play. Simoes also is the league leader in major penalties with 12. His 74 penalty minutes and 12 majors rank him first in the CHL among defensemen in both categories.

Beech Backstopping the RiverKings

Goaltender Kevin Beech has played all but one game in goal for the RiverKings this season, fashioning a 2.81 goals-against-average in eleven games. Beech is tied for second in the league in wins with his 6-5-0 record for the year and is second in minutes played (662) and in games (11). Beech also ranks fifth in saves at 247. The Brantford, Ontario, Canada native is in his second CHL season, having played in Laredo and Youngstown last year.
