Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
MOVE OVER, SMOKIN' JOE
CHL legend Joe Burton finally has some company atop the league's all-time record book. Mudbugs center Travis Clayton tied Burton's CHL record for career games played when he appeared in the 708th game of his CHL career on Saturday night in Laredo. Clayton played 11 seasons with the Wichita Thunder before joining the Mudbugs as a free agent this offseason, appearing in six all-star games and surpassing nearly every career record in the team's history during his time with Wichita. Not only will Clayton hold the all-time CHL record for games played the next time he steps on the ice, but he also ranks second in league history in goals and third in both assists and points.
TOUGH TRIP
The Mudbugs have lost consecutive games for the first time this year after losing both of the first two games of a five-game road trip last weekend. The Bugs earned a point but lost in overtime Friday night in Texas and then fell again in Laredo on Saturday 4-0. Even still, the Mudbugs sit only three points off the pace in the CHL right now with an 8-3-1 record and 17 points. Only Colorado and Oklahoma City (with 20 points each) are above Bossier-Shreveport in the league standings entering this week.
GO WEST, YOUNG MEN
Bossier-Shreveport continues its road trip this week with its one and only visit of the season to the state of Colorado. The Mudbugs will take on Rocky Mountain on Friday in their second and final regular season meeting with the Rage, who have won two straight. On Saturday, the Bugs get another crack at Colorado and will be looking for some payback for the Eagles' 3-2 win at CenturyTel Center three weeks ago. The team will then wrap up the road trip in Texas on Wednesday, November 26 before playing a pair of home games that weekend.
WALKING WOUNDED
Various injuries forced the Mudbugs to play most of Saturday's game in Laredo with just 13 skaters. The Bugs entered the weekend with four players on the injured reserve list and had three more miss at least some of the weekend's action. The team will look to get healthy with five full days to rest and recuperate before its next game on Friday night.
#9 IS FINALLY DENIED
Mudbugs second-year forward Tyrel Lucas finally saw his career-high nine game point streak snapped on Saturday in Laredo. Since re-joining the team for its third game this year, Lucas had recorded at least one point in every game this season through Friday night in Texas. The 24-year-old Williams Lake, British Columbia native is just a point off the team lead in scoring with 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists) in ten games this season. The nine-game point streak is best on the Mudbugs this year and smashes Lucas' previous career high of five straight games with a point.
LAST WEEK
Wed., November 12 vs. Mississippi CenturyTel Center W 4-3
GAME NOTES: The RiverKings scored first in the game, but Bossier-Shreveport got goals from Joe Blaznek, Neil Clark and Kevin Cooper to take a 3-1 lead into the second period. Mississippi came back with two second period goals to tie it up at three entering the third. The stalemate continued all the way through the period until J.J. Martin's powerplay goal put the Bugs on top with just 36 seconds left and gave them a 4-3 victory over their division rivals.
Fri., November 14 at Texas NyTex Sports Centre L 5-4 (OT)
GAME NOTES: The Brahmas scored two quick goals to start the game, but before the first period was over, the Mudbugs had battled back with two powerplay goals (Blaznek, Lucas) and one at even strength (Cooper) to take a 3-2 lead. They made it 4-2 in the third period before Texas started its rally. A powerplay goal cut the lead to one before Justin Kinnunen tied it up with just eight seconds left in regulation. Then Grant Jacobsen scored on a powerplay in overtime to give the Brahmas a 5-4 win.
Sat., November 15 at Laredo Laredo Entertainment Center L 4-0
GAME NOTES: Laredo scored three goals in the first eight minutes to take a commanding lead after the first period. Despite 22 shots on goal over the last 40 minutes of the game, the Mudbugs never could solve Sebastien Centomo and fell 4-0 to the Bucks. It was the first time the Mudbugs had been shutout since November 2, 2007 against Mississippi. The season series between the two rivals is now tied at 1-1 with two meetings left this season.
