Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings successfully celebrated the jersey retirement of all-time scoring leader Don Parsons with a 6-4 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven Saturday night, March 13th. Derek Landmesser had a four-point night with a goal and three assists, while Ryan Held and Elias Godoy each added a goal and two helpers each in the RiverKings' fourth straight victory.
Mississippi took a 2-1 lead in the first period, starting with Louis Dumont's 22nd goal of the season at 6:24. Dumont took a pass off the left wall from Ryan Held and deflected it past the Mudbugs' goaltender into the back of the net. David Samos also assisted on the goal.
The RiverKings increased the lead to 2-0 when Dane Marshall scored on the power play nearly two minutes later at 8:23. Held and Dumont assisted on Marshall's sixth goal of the year.
Bossier-Shreveport cut the margin in half on David Pszenyczny's deflection past RiverKings' goalie Kyle McNulty at 12:14 for a 2-1 RiverKings' lead after one period of play.
Mississippi took a 4-2 after two periods on goals from Elias Godoy and Derek Landmesser to counter a Bossier-Shreveport goal from David Rutherford.
Godoy benefitted from a deflection on his play from the side of the net for his 12th goal of the year, on the power play at five minutes of the frame, assisted by Derek Landmesser and Kevin Truelson for a 3-1 RiverKings' lead.
The Mudbugs cut the margin back to one goal on the counter from Rutherford at 12:48, but another power play goal by the RiverKings moved the lead back to two goals. Landmesser found the back of the net from the right point at 14:17, assisted by Godoy and Bobby Chaumont for a 4-2 advantage after forty minutes of play. Third period scoring went back and forth, as Bossier-Shreveport got within a goal of the RiverKings on two occasions, but Mississippi answered each time.
Joe Blaznek scored the third Mudbugs' goal at 1:06 of the third, but the RiverKings answered with the eventual game-winning goal from Stephen Margeson, his tenth of the year from Landmesser and Godoy at 6:09 for a 5-3 lead.
Jason Deleurme again moved Bossier-Shreveport within one at 5-4 on a goal at eight minutes of the period, his sixth of the year and first with the Mudbugs, but again the RiverKings answered for the final score of 6-4. Ryan Held netted his team-leading 33rd goal of the year on a power play tally, assisted by Stoddard and Landmesser at 15:15 for the final outcome.
Mississippi was outshot 38-30 for the game. Tim Boron (7-8-2) was the winning goaltender for the RiverKings, replacing Kyle McNulty, who was hurt in the first period. Boron stopped 24 shots for the RiverKings in posting his seventh win of the season.
Ken Carroll (14-8-3) took the loss in goal for Bossier-Shreveport with a 24-save effort.
Prior to the game, a ceremony was held to retire the RiverKings number 13 jersey of Parsons, who holds several scoring records with the RiverKings franchise and ended his career last season as the all-time minor professional goal scorer and all-time record holder for goals by an American-born professional hockey player.
With the win, Mississippi moves its record to 31-23-7 for 69 points and for the moment is three points behind the third place Mudbugs in the CHL Northern Conference standings. Bossier-Shreveport falls to 34-21-4 but has a Sunday afternoon home game against Corpus Christi before a rematch with the RiverKings Tuesday night in Louisiana at 7:05 PM.
Mississippi finishes the regular season next Friday and Saturday night with home games at the DeSoto Civic Center against the Tulsa Oilers, starting both nights at 7:05 PM.
