Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - The Mississippi RiverKings scored four times in 11 powerplay opportunities to beat the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 6-4 Saturday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the Mudbugs got within one goal four separate times, but never could net the equalizer in just their third loss to Mississippi this year.
Joe Blaznek scored a goal and added two assists in the game, while Dave Pszenyczny had a goal and an assist and Brett Smith chipped in two helpers. Jason Deleurme also notched a goal in his first game as a Mudbug. A total of 18 powerplays and four two-man advantages were handed out in the game, with the âBugs converting one of seven powerplays.
Mississippi jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in a two minute span of the first period. First Louis Dumont knocked in a Ryan Held centering pass at 6:24 and then Dane Marshall scored on the powerplay at 8:23 to give the âKings a 2-0 advantage. The âBugs cut the lead in half when Dave Pszenyczny cut in from the point and redirected Joe Blaznek's centering feed into the net for his ninth goal of the year, making it 2-1 after 20 minutes.
Mississippi got the two-goal lead back five minutes into the second with a powerplay goal as Elias Godoy threw a pass out front that bounced off a skate and into the net. The Mudbugs again climbed back to make it 3-2 as David Rutherford picked up a loose puck during a scrum in front and put it past Tim Boron at 12:48. The RiverKings went back up by two again though as Derek Landmesser scored on a 5-on-3 powerplay to put the home team on top 4-2 heading into the third.
The back and forth see-saw continued in the third period when Blaznek scored just 1:06 in to cut the lead back to 4-3, only to see the âKings answer with a goal from Stephen Margeson. Jason Deleurme batted a rebound out of mid-air and into the net on the powerplay to get the âBugs back within 5-4 at 8:00 of the third. Mississippi then reached the final two-goal margin of 6-4 when Ryan Held finished off a 2-on-1 break for the RiverKings' fourth powerplay goal of the game at 15:15.
Ken Carroll took the loss in goal after making 24 saves for the Mudbugs, who outshot the RiverKings 38-30. Kyle McNulty started the game and made ten saves for Mississippi before being replaced by Tim Boron, who made 24 stops to earn the win.
The Mudbugs will now return to Bossier-Shreveport to start a four-game homestand tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 pm against the Corpus Christi IceRays at CenturyTel Center.
