RiverKings Move Up In Coaches Poll

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings have moved up two spots in the latest Yellowbook Central Hockey League (CHL) Coaches Poll, released today from the league offices in Tempe, Arizona.

Ranked tenth in the last poll released at the beginning of January, Mississippi is now ranked eighth in the latest poll.

Mississippi has a record of 17-15-4 for 38 points and is in fourth place in the Northern Conference standings prior to tonight's schedule of CHL games.

The RiverKings garnered 44 points in the polling of the league's 15 head coaches. The rating system is on a sliding 10,9,8,7,6,5, etc. scale with ten points given for the number one spot. No coach is allowed to vote for his own team.

Odessa (28-6-3) remains the number one team in the poll's top ten. The Southern Conference leaders received 139 points, including 13 of the 15 possible first place votes.

The rest of the top five include Northern Conference leader Colorado (23-7-3) in second place with one first place vote and 115 points, Rapid City (24-9-1) in third with one first place vote and 114 points, Allen (25-9-2) in fourth place with 113 points, and defending champion Texas (19-13-5) in fifth place with 83 points.

The top seven teams in the poll actually remain the same from the last rankings at the first of the year, as Bossier-Shreveport remains sixth and Laredo stays in seventh. Mississippi then moves up to eighth place, as Rio Grande Valley drops one spot to ninth place and Missouri enters the rankings at number ten.

Tulsa dropped out of the poll from the last rankings.

Next action for the Mississippi RiverKings comes at home this weekend against the Missouri Mavericks. Game time Friday and Saturday nights are at 7:05 PM in Southaven.

Friday night in "Faith and Family Night," with the Samaritans and Entergy's Power to Care Initiative being the featured non-profit MVP.

Saturday is "Ducks Unlimited/Pack the House/Arena White Out Night," with Ducks Unlimited being the spotlighted non-profit MVP. The RiverKings are also on their way toward filling the DeSoto Civic Center with hockey fans that night, and those attending are urged to wear white for an arena white out.

In addition, fans coming to both games this weekend will have the opportunity to support the relief effort for victims of the recent Haitian earthquake. Representatives of the faith-based organization "Compassion International" will be at each entrance and RiverKings fans are urged to give to the group's earthquake relief activities.

One-hundred percent of the money collected both nights will go directly to help the people of Haiti vicimized by the recent earthquake through Compassion International.
