Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings will spotlight the works of the Horn Lake Parks and Recreation Department with special regard for the city's youth sports programs during the hockey team's Saturday, Oct. 23rd game.
"As the region's longest-running professional sports team going on 19 seasons, the RiverKings has a vested interest in the success of youth sports programs," Director of Business Operations Dave "Ab" Mattice said. "Additionally, Horn Lake and Mayor Nat Baker has been among our best supporters. We are happy to help them achieve their goals, especially if those goals are going to help young people succeed."
Horn Lake Parks and Recreation's mission is to provide a safe and fun environment for kids and adults of all ages and to provide activities for everyone in Horn Lake and surrounding areas.
"We have 16 parks throughout the city, where we offer basketball, baseball, football, cheerleading, soccer, men's and co-ed adult softball, three fishing lakes, walking trails, disk golf and lighted tennis courts," Horn Lake Parks and Recreation Director John Willoughby said. "We hope to expand our park system through additional playground and exercise equipment in our neighborhood parks and additional daily maintenance. We also hope to construct a park office with an attached community center in the future." Willoughby said that the focus of the fundraiser is to invest in the programs and the youth who participate in them.
"The best part of my job is being able to work with the kids in our community, giving them an opportunity to learn youth sports in a structured environment," Willoughby said. "The personal and civic reward from that is tremendous."
