The Komets are heading west. The Komets are set to embark on an 1,819 mile trip, the longest in the CHL, to face the Arizona Sundogs in Prescott Valley, Arizona. It's been 11 years since the Fort Wayne hockey club has made a trip to the West. This week's journey will be the first trip west since the Komets traveled to Las Vegas to skate against the IHL's Thunder Jan. 29, 1999.
The Komets will skate back-to-back games at Arizona Friday and Saturday before returning home. Both games are schedule to begin at 7:05pm faceoff Arizona time, 10:05pm Fort Wayne time, at Tim's Toyota Center (4,810). Friday's affair will be Arizona's home opener. Last year the Sundogs opened the season with back-to-back home games attracting 3,987 for the home opener.
The Komets dropped their home opener last Saturday night 4-0 to the reigning CHL champion Rapid City Rush, while the Sundogs split their season opening weekend 1-1-0 in a pair at Colorado.
The Komets' had their home opener unbeaten streak snapped at 15 games (13-0-2). It was the first loss in regulation of a Fort Wayne home opener since Sep. 30, 1994 when the Indianapolis Ice spoiled the night for a sold out crowd of 8,003 stopping the Komets 5-2.
Saturday night's Fort Wayne crowd of 10,480 was the Komets' third straight sell-out of a home opener and ninth straight home opener crowd of over 10,000 fans.
On the record.....last year the Komets posted a 21-14-3 road record while Arizona registered a record of 9-20-3 at home. The Komets finished the 2009-10 in second place in the IHL with a 50-21-5 record (.691) and the Sundogs completed the CHL season ranked 13th with a 24-34-6 record (.422).
Milestones.....Komet goaltender Nick Boucher will appear in his 300th career game his next time out.....center Mathieu Curadeau has netted 95 career goals.....winger Sean O'Connor has registered 98 points in his career in Fort Wayne.
Next home games Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6.....the Komets will be back in action at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Friday, Nov. 5 at 8pm when the Bloomington PrairieThunder make their first visit of the season. Then the new Evansville IceMen made their Fort Wayne debut Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7:30pm.
