RiverKings clinch first playoff appearance since '03

March 3, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH --- The Memphis RiverKings are going to postseason play in the Central Hockey League for the first time since the 2002-2003 President's Cup Championship season. Despite falling to the Youngstown Steelhounds last night, the RiverKings earned a berth in the Northern Conference playoffs when the Tulsa Oilers lost 8-0 at Bossier Shreveport.

Bossier-Shreveport also punched their postseason ticket last night with that win over Tulsa. The RiverKings and Mudugs join the Colorado Eagles and the Laredo Bucks, who had clinched spots earlier in the week.

At 34-14-5 and 73 points, the RiverKings are currently second in the Northeast Division and hold the third position in the Northern Conference playoff seeding. Including tonight's game in Youngstown (see preview below), the RiverKings have 11 games remaining in the regular season, five at home, with the season finale on Saturday, March 24 versus Bossier-Shreveport at the Desoto Civic Center.

THE MATCH UP

The RiverKings and Steelhounds close out their three game series at the Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown tonight. The playoff- bound RiverKings will be looking to rebound from a 4-1 loss last night and will be looking to end a four game winless streak (0-2-2). Memphis' loss and Bossier-Shreveport's win over Tulsa last night knocked the RiverKings out of first place in the Northeast Division. It is the first time since November 24 that the RiverKings have not occupied first place. The Steelhounds are on a franchise record eight game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) and a five game winning streak. The RiverKings are now 4-2-3 this season versus Youngstown, 12-3-3 all-time, and 5-1-1 all-time in the Mahoning Valley.
