Bucks Rally For 6-5 Shootout Win In Austin

LAREDO, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks rallied three times from two goal deficits and posted a 6-5 shootout win on the road over the Austin Ice Bats in front of 1,900 fans at the Chaparell Ice Center. Defenseman Serge Dube had a pair of goals as the Bucks registered their season high tying eighth straight win. In their last 15 road games they are 12-1-2. Overall Laredo improved their Southern Conference best record to 36-13-5 with 77 points, and they lead Corpus Christi by eleven points with one game in hand in the Southeast Division race. Laredo returns home on Friday. The first 2,000 fans get a Bucks mouse pad courtesy of Doctors Hospital. If Laredo sells out the game they will donate $10,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, so pack the house for JDRF. The Bucks are offering season tickets starting at less than $79. The Ice Bats jumped all over the Bucks in the first period as defenseman Chad McIver scored a power play goal on a wrister from the left wall to make it 1-0 at 4:30. At 8:33 forward Marty Doyle put home a rebound to make it 2-0 Austin.

The Bucks charged back in the second period. Laredo got on the scoreboard when forward Igor Pohanka spun in a rebound for a power play tally at 11:05. It was his fifth straight game with a goal and sixth of the season. Just 53 seconds later the Bucks drew even as Dube cut right side into the Austin zone and ripped home a wrist shot from the top of the right circle for his 13th of the season. Six of his total this year have come against Austin. The Bucks out shot the Ice Bats 17-2 in the frame.

In the third period it was Austin striking for a quick two goals to retake the lead. Forward Julian Smith made it 3-2 at 5:14 on a quick wrist shot in front, then forward Henry Kuster caped off a two-on-one rush making it 4-2 at 7:06. The Bucks once again answered as forward Steve Simoes lit the lamp shorthanded at 9:52 to get Laredo back within 4-3 with his second of the year. Once again Austin took a two goal lead as former Bucks, defenseman Adam Davis fired a shot from the point that was deflected off a Laredo defenseman in front at 11:56. The Bucks continued to respond as forward Jeff Bes centered a pass off an Ice Bats defenseman and into the net at 16:27 for his 25th of the season to once again make it a one goal game. At 17:11 Laredo tied it 5-5 on a power play as defenseman Adam Rivet blasted home a one-timer from the point for his CHL defense leading 19th of the year.

The game went to overtime and neither team could score. In the shootout Bucks goalie Kevin Reiter stopped all four shooters, while Dube and defenseman Steve Weidlich scored to give Laredo the win. FINAL SCORE Laredo 6, Austin 5 in a shootout.

Reiter stopped 19 of 24 in 64:00 minutes and was perfect in the shootout to improve to 13-5-1. Miguel Beaudry stopped 43 of 48 shots and allowed two goals in the shootout as he fell to 12-9-9. The Bucks were 2-6 on the power play, while Austin went 1-5. Laredo out shot the Ice Bats 49-24.
