Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

In a Southeast staredown between the Corpus Christi Rayz and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, it took more than sixty minutes for someone to blink. At 1:49 into overtime on Saturday Night, Rio Grande Valley finally did. Brent Zelenewich and Nick Lindberg emerged as the heroes in the Rayz 1-0 overtime win. Zelenewich made 28 saves for his second shutout of the season and Lindberg scored the game's only goal in overtime to lead the Rayz to their sixth win in the last nine games. The win lowered the Rayz magic number to six points to clinch a playoff spot and gave the Rayz their sixth win in seven games vs. Rio Grande Valley. Corpus Christi remained in second place in the Southeast Division and the Southern Conference and will continue their four-game homestand Sunday afternoon against the Laredo Bucks.

Neither team found the back of the net in an evenly played opening period. The Bees outshot the Rayz 8-6. Corpus Christi defenseman Chris Mei took on Rio Grande Valley's Dale Butland in the only fight of the first stanza. The teams stayed scoreless through the second and entered the final period searching for the game's first goal. The Bees outshot the Rayz 11-10 in the second period. The Rayz finished regulation the same way they started it as the regulation shutout continued for both teams.

In overtime, both teams mustered one shot and Lindberg ended the game when he found a loose puck in the offensive zone and skated in on Jeff Van Nynatten beating him upstairs for the overtime, game winner.

Zelenewich improved to 11-8-2 on the year while Van Nynatten took the loss, making 26 saves on 27 shots and fell to 7-11-2. The Bees outshot the Rayz 28-27. The Rayz went 0-2 on the power play and the Bees went 0-1.

The Corpus Christi Rayz return home to the American Bank Center on Sunday to host their biggest rivals the Laredo Bucks at 3:05pm for Caller-Times Family Day. It's another battle of the top two teams in the Southern Conference when the Rayz and Bucks collide. Corpus Christi has beaten Laredo three of the last four games. On Caller-Time Family Day, kids 12 and under will receive FREE tickets to the game with the purchase of a regular priced adult ticket. Plus, after the game the Rayz will take the ice with their fans in a free skating session with the public.
