Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC -- After losing the series opener on Monday, the Greenville Drive (30-34) were aiming to get back on the right track against the Charleston RiverDogs (30-35). Through seven innings, they looked to be on their way, but a six-run eighth inning propelled the RiverDogs to an 8-5 victory.
Trailing 4-2 entering the eighth, the RiverDogs staged a massive comeback against Drive reliever Ellis Jimenez (0-1). After a Jackson Valera single, Dustin Fowler lined a triple to right field to cut the lead to one. Jimenez then issued a walk, and Reymond Nunez smoked a two-run double to right-center to put Charleston on top. Later in the frame, Tyler Wade hit a three-run triple to put the game away.
The rally made a winner of Charleston reliever Eric Ruth (1-1), who allowed one earned run in three and two-third innings of work. Philip Walby earned his third save of the season for the RiverDogs.
Charleston started the game off with a single run in the top of the first, as Drive starter Jamie Callahan gave up a hit to Michael O'Neill, then balked him to second. O'Neill scored on an Aaron Judge double to left field.
In the second, the Drive came back with a run thanks to back-to-back singles by Wendell Rijo and Manuel Margot, a successful double steal, and a Kendrick Perkins sacrifice fly.
Miguel Andujar put the RiverDogs back on top in the third inning with a solo homer to left-center off Callahan.
The Drive came right back to tie the game in the third once again, as Jimmy Rider hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Carlos Asuaje's RBI single. Perkins gave them a 3-2 lead in the fourth with a triple to score Margot, who singled and stole second.
A 38 minute rain delay before the top of the fifth chased both Callahan and Charleston starter Ian Clarkin. Pete Ruiz entered for the Drive and hurled a pair of scoreless innings.
Perkins led the way for Greenville with a 3-3 night and 3 RBI. Margot added three hits of his own, while Asuaje, Rider and Tzu-Wei Lin had two hits apiece. Nunez went 2-4 with two RBI to lead the RiverDogs offense, while Judge and Valera added two hits each.
Greenville RH Teddy Stankiewicz (4-4, 4.18) will start on Wednesday night as the Drive look to avoid a series sweep. First pitch is at 7:05. LH Caleb Smith (4-5, 3.25) will take the mound for Charleston.
