Shorebirds Game Notes vs. Hickory

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds' spectacular comeback was all for naught as Hickory prevailed 11-9 on Tuesday night. Delmarva trailed 8-0 before scoring nine unanswered runs, including a go-ahead bases-clearing double by Jared Breen in the 8th inning. However, All-Star closer Jimmy Yacabonis allowed three runs in the top of the 9th, and Hickory spoiled the comeback.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Tyler Smith will start the finale for the Hickory Crawdads. Smith is 2-1 with a 3.02 ERA on the season, primarily as a reliever for Hickory. The right-hander was exclusively out of the bullpen until May 16th, and now has transitioned into the rotation. The 22-year-old allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings to West Virginia in his last start. The Texas Rangers selected Smith in the 19th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of USC-Sumter.

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles were shut out 1-0 by the Boston Red Sox to even the series at one game apiece. Brandon Workman allowed just one hit in 6 2/3 innings for Boston, while Chris Tillman took a loss in the pitchers' duel. In other O's news, Manny Machado received a five-game suspension for tossing his bat during the Oakland series.

THE IRON IS HOT: 20 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.

MIKE YASTRZEMSKI | OF

Yastrzemski, along with four other Shorebirds (Dosch, Harvey, Va- der and Yacabonis) was named to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. Yastrzemski cur- rently leads the league in triples with 10, and out- field assists with 11. His two home-run game last week in Hagerstown as the first multi-HR game for a Shorebird this year.

WHO'S HOT - JON KELLER

The Shorebirds reliever has been a key part of the impressive Delmarva bullpen. Since allowing five runs in his first 4 appearances, Keller has given up just one run in his last 12 outings, with at least 2 Ks every time out.

WHO ELSE - TREY MANCINI

The Shorebirds first baseman had a 17-game hitting streak snapped on Saturday. Mancini is second on the team with 37 RBIs, while leading the team in batting average (.317) and hits (80).
