RiverDogs Snap Losing Skid; Move to Brink of First-Half Title

Charleston, SC- Irwil Rojas' bases-loaded walk in the 10th drove home Marcos Vechionacci with the game-winning run, and the Charleston RiverDogs moved potentially within one victory of clinching the Southern Division first-half championship with a 5-4, 10-inning victory over the Augusta Greenjackets Sunday at Riley Park.

The RiverDogs may have an opportunity to clinch the first half Southern Division title Monday night with a win, if Asheville loses either game of its doubleheader against Greenville. The Tourists potentially could remain mathematically alive even with a Charleston win Monday if they win both ends of their twin bill.

Rojas drew the fourth consecutive base on balls from Augusta pitching in the bottom of the 10th, as Brian Stirm (3-2) walked Marcos Vechionacci, Cody Ehlers and Ben Jones before Adam Gardner came on and forced home the winning run. With the win, the RiverDogs snapped a four-game losing skid and moved five games ahead of the second-place Greenjackets with six to play in the first half.

T.J. Beam (1-2) retired all six batters he faced in the ninth and tenth innings to record his first victory of the season after coming on in relief of Philip Hughes and Josh Smith. Hughes allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits in six innings pitched and failed to record a victory for only the second time in his last nine starts.

Ben Jones and Estee Harris each homered for Charleston, which led 2-0 into the sixth after Jones long ball to right field in the bottom of the first inning. But Hughes allowed five consecutive two-out hits in the sixth, including an RBI double by Carlos Sosa and a two-run single by Simon Klink, that gave Augusta its first lead at 3-2.

Harris drove an Osiris Matos pitch out to right once again in the bottom of the sixth with Jones aboard to reclaim a 4-3 lead for Charleston. It was his third home run in the last four games, and seventh of the season. Matos, the Augusta starter, allowed four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

The Greenjackets tied the game 4-4 in the seventh off of Smith on a double-play ground out by Mike Wagner, and it remained that way until the RiverDogs four consecutive walks in the 10th.

Game three of the series will be played Monday night, as Christian Garcia (4-3) is scheduled take the mound for Charleston. Augusta counters with righty Darren Sack (2-3). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
