Lake County Captains News Release

(Salisbury, MD)—Delmarva's Jason Fransz homered and drove in three RBI Sunday afternoon, and the Shorebirds snapped Lake County's three-game winning streak with a 5-2 win over the Captains at Perdue Stadium.

A night after the Captains rolled up a dozen runs in a 12-1 victory, three Shorebirds pitchers combined to scatter 10 hits and hold the Captains to two runs. The Captains had won five in a row over the Shorebirds prior to Sunday's loss.

The loss dampened but did not dissolve the Captains' first-half title hopes. The Captains went into Sunday's game tied for second place, two games behind Lexington. A Lexington win over Hagerstown on Sunday would leave the Captains and Suns each three games out of first with six games left to play in the half.

After the Captains took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Chad Longworth, Delmarva answered with three in the bottom of the first against Aaron Laffey (5-3). Eric Grimm drove in the tying run with an RBI single, and Fransz stroked an opposite-field, two-run homer off Laffey for a 3-1 lead. It was Fransz's fourth of the season.

Lefty Carlos Perez (4-4) limited the Captains to five hits in five innings to pick up the win. He walked one and struck out six. After giving up Longworth's RBI single in the first, Perez worked out of a bases-loaded jam, and then held the Captains to just two hits over the next four innings.

The Captains (37-27) pulled to within 3-2 in the sixth on doubles by Longworth and Tim Montgomery. The Shorebirds (28-36) pushed two more across in the seventh off Adrian Schau to make it 5-2. Lefty David Haehnel recorded the final four outs for his 15th save.

The Captains, 4-2 on the current road trip, were 2-10 with runners in scoring position.

Game three of the series is Monday evening at 7:05 P.M. (WELW AM 1330).
