Columbus Catfish News Release

KANNAPOLIS, NC— Tying a season-high in runs with 11 on a 2005-best 18 hits, the Catfish won their third straight game on the current eight-game road trip, beating Kannapolis 11-7 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis. CF Jamie Hoffmann went 4-6 and drove home a run, and 2B Brandon Carter went 3-4 with 2 RBI and four runs scored. RHP Steve Nelson picked up his first win since the 2003 season in relief as Nelson missed all of 2004 recovering from Tommy John Surgery. The Catfish are now 3-3 on the current road trip and have won the first two games of the four-game set with the Kannapolis Intimidators (Chicago White Sox). The Catfish improve to 26-37 with the win and Kannapolis drops to 32-32.

Columbus struck for eight runs in the third inning against Kannapolis starter LHP Ray Liotta. SS Lucas May's two-run single opened the scoring for the Catfish in the third inning. An RBI single by RF Ryan Russ made it 3-0, and 1B Dan Batz's RBI groundout gave the Fish a 4-0 advantage. Carter singled to lead off the inning and drove home two more with two-outs in the third with a single to center. Hoffmann capped the scoring with a flare into center for a run-scoring single, giving the Fish an 8-0 lead after the top of the third. RHP Zach Hammes finished three innings in a spot start today, allowing three runs (two earned), giving up all of the runs in the bottom half of the third.

Nelson gave up three runs to the Intimidators in the fifth, allowing Kannapolis to pull within four at 10-6. In the seventh inning, LHP Carlos Alvarez continued his lights-out 2005 season, coming out of the bullpen to strike out two in the seventh, two in the eighth, and one in the ninth for his second save of the season. The Catfish and Intimidators square off in Game 3 of the series tomorrow at 7:05, as Columbus sends RHP Brandon Weeden (2-4, 4.00 ERA) to the hill for his 12th start of 2005.
