KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs overcame an early deficit with a five-run sixth inning, defeating the Kannapolis Intimidators, 8-5, on Saturday night in front of 4,935 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.

Kannapolis starter Chris Devenski held the RiverDogs off the scoreboard over the first five innings, but he opened the sixth inning by giving up two singles and hitting a batter prompting his exit. Daniel Webb entered the game with the bases loaded and gave up a infield hit to Dante Bichette Jr. followed by a bases-clearing double by Casey Stevenson that put the RiverDogs ahead, 4-3. Francisco Arcia added a sac-fly for a 5-3 lead.

Kannapolis had led since the first inning when Adam Heisler and Joey DeMichele drew walks to open the bottom of the first inning, and Kevan Smith blasted an opposite field home run (7) for an early 3-0 lead, his second in as many day.

Ben Paullus (3-1) worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning for Charleston to earn the win in relief of starter Bryan Mitchell, who allowed three runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Webb (0-6) suffered the loss, and Charleston's Pedro Guerra worked two scoreless innings for the save (5).

Ali Castillo led off the seventh by singling off Stew Brase and going first-to-third on a wild pitch. Cito Culver chopped a ball over shortstop Garis Pena to cash Castillo. Culver scored on a Ben Gamel groundout to first extending Charleston's lead to 7-3.

Kannapolis got a pair of runs back in the seventh off John Brebbia highlighted by a Joey DeMichele run-scoring single with two outs to pull within 7-5, but the Intimidators would not score again.

In the top of the seventh inning, first baseman Leighton Pangilinan left the game after being involved in a collision at first base. Martin Medina took over at first base for Pangilinan and went 0-1 at the plate with a flyout to center field in the eighth inning, snapping his 19-game hitting streak that dated back to June 5. The streak matched the longest in the South Atlantic League this season.
