Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Hagerstown, MD - On a misty Maryland night, the Augusta GreenJackets were denied their third straight victory as the Hagerstown Suns got a tenth-inning RBI single from JR Higley to win 5-4 over the GreenJackets on Saturday.
After the GreenJackets left the bases loaded in the top of the tenth, an error put Justin Miller of the Suns at second base to start the bottom of the tenth. After a sacrifice bunt moved Miller to third, Brett Newsome was intentionally walked to set up the double play. With runners at the corners, Higley's single to right field scored Miller with the game-winning run to give Hagerstown their first win of the series.
The Suns jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the game, getting their first run in the first inning off Augusta starter Adalberto Mejia on a pair of infield hits and two of Augusta's four errors. In the third, the Suns scored two more on Cutter Dykstra's sacrifice fly and Justin Miller's RBI double.
Hagerstown starter Brian Rauh - in his first South Atlantic League start - was barely touched early on. He retired the first 11 hitters he faced and 15 of the first 17 before he was touched up in the sixth. Myles Schroder led off the inning with his first homer of the year to put the GreenJackets on the board, trailing 3-1. With one out in the inning, the GreenJackets loaded the bases on a pair of hits and a hit batsman. Jose Flores hit a sacrifice fly to pull the GreenJackets to within a run and with two outs, Ben Thomas drilled a two-strike pitch into left-center to tie the game at three.
Schroder again provided the spark in the seventh when the GreenJackets took their only lead of the night. With one out, Schroder was hit by a pitch to reach first. With Kelby Tomlinson at the plate, Schroder took second on a wild pitch and moved to third when the throw to second hit Schroder and went into the outfield. After Tomlinson struck out, Schroder scored on the inning's second wild pitch to give Augusta a 4-3 lead.
That lead wouldn't last long though, as the Suns struck back to tie the game in the seventh. After Caleb Ramsey singled off Mejia with one out and took second on a wild pitch, he stole third as Billy Burns struck out for the inning's second out. Derek Law came on and was ahead of Bryce Ortega by a 1-2 count before Ortega dumped a single into right-center to score Ortega and tie the game at four. Law left runners at second and third in the eighth and stranded a runner in the ninth to send the game to extras.
Kevin Couture (2-5) was the tough-luck loser, hurt by the leadoff error in the tenth to take the loss for the GreenJackets. Richie Mirowski (2-1) threw three scoreless innings - retiring six of the first seven he faced before getting into trouble in the tenth - to earn the win for the Suns.
The GreenJackets send Paul Davis (4-4, 3.73) to the mound on Sunday in an attempt to take three of four from the Suns in their final 2012 visit to Hagerstown. First pitch from Hagerstown comes at 1:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 12:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Friday July 27th to open a three-game series with the Hickory Crawdads at 7:05 p.m. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
