Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power and Delmarva Shorebirds split games at Appalachian Power Park. The Power beat the Shorebirds 9-1 in the resumption of Friday night's suspended doubleheader game two and lost 4-1 in the regularly scheduled Saturday game played out to seven innings.
In the second game of a doubleheader on Friday night, Delmarva tallied a run in the first on two West Virginia errors. The Power quickly backed spot starter Mike Jefferson with two runs of support in the bottom half of the first inning on three singles, including run-scoring hits by Gregory Polanco and Ashley Ponce.
West Virginia sent ten men to the plate in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on five hits, a walk, a hit batter, and two Delmarva errors.
The top of the third inning was played in a light rain shower that gradually got heavier and forced the grounds crew to put the tarp on the field. The ground was then deemed unplayable and the game was suspended.
West Virginia added a run in the third when play resumed and capped the scoring with a run in the fifth. Robbie Kilcrease and Porfirio Lopez pitched four scoreless innings of relief helping the Power limit the Shorebirds to one hit in the game. Kilcrease (1-2) tossed two innings and earned the win.
In Saturday's scheduled game, starting pitchers Robby Rowland and Parker Bridwell matched zeros for three innings. West Virginia struck first when Willy Garcia hit a solo home run in the fourth for a 1-0 advantage. The home run was his tenth of the season and drove in his 59th run batted in this season.
The Shorebirds answered with a two-run fifth inning to take the lead and added a two-run home run by Wynston Sawyerin the fifth for a 4-1 edge.
Rowland (5-3) and Bridwell (3-7) each pitched all seven innings. Rowland allowed 10 hits in the loss while Bridwell surrendered six hits and just the one run.
West Virginia and Delmarva will play the final game of this four-game homestand on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Ryan Hafner will start for the Power and will be opposed by the Shorebirds Matt Taylor. First pitch is slated for 2:05 pm.
