Lance Pendleton threw five innings of two-hit ball and the RiverDogs shutout the Drive on only five hits as Charleston blanked Greenville, 5-0, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 2,612 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, Charleston improves to 26-11 on the season while Greenville falls to 20-18. The game opened a four-game series and an eight-game homestand for the RiverDogs.

Pendleton (2-2), in who has not allowed a run in each of his last two starts, struck out six batters over five scoreless frames. Relievers Wilkins de la Rosa and Casey Erickson finished the job, with De la Rosa pitching three frames and allowing one hit while Erickson threw the ninth and surrendered two hits.

The RiverDogs recorded their fourth shutout victory of the season. Offensively, Charleston collected six hits on the night with right fielder Dave Williams recording a pair and accounting for two RBI.

Charleston scored a run in the first inning when Justin Snyder singled and scored on Jesus Montero's RBI double to center. The hosts added another run in the third on Carmen Angelini's solo home run to left center, the first of his career, coming on the first pitch he saw from Greenville starter Felix Doubront (4-1).

Charleston extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth when with one out Taylor Holiday singled and Chase Odenreider reached on a fielding error by Drive shortstop Yamaico Navarro. With runners then on first and second, Williams doubled to left and scored both men.

In the seventh, Williams tripled to left and scored when Greenville catcher Ty Weeden couldn't hold on to a Bryce Cox pitch, improving Charleston's advantage to 5-0.

Doubront, who pitched five complete innings, suffered the loss, his first of the season. The lefty allowed four runs on three hits while striking out four RiverDogs. Cox threw the sixth and seventh innings and allowed one run on a hit while Felix Ventura, in pitching the eighth inning, struck out one.

Charleston improves to 14-4 when starting against a southpaw this season.

Ryan Kalish recorded two of Greenville's five hits on the night.

Game 2 of this four-game block is set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with the RiverDogs sending righty Noel Castillo (3-2, 3.63 ERA) to the mound. The Drive are expected to counter with righty Eammon Portice (2-4, 3.62 ERA), a recent High Point University product.
