Asheville Tourists News Release
Savannah, GA - Asheville scored three runs on a double from Jeffrey Cunningham and held on to win 3-2 over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Monday to open up an eight game road trip. Cory Riordan (5-2) turned in his longest outing of the season as Asheville has now won three consecutive games and will maintain their half game lead for first place.
Riordan tossed 7 2/3 innings and struck out six in the one run victory. The right hander did not walk a batter and earned his first road win of the year. Craig Rodriguez entered with two outs in the eighth and struck out Casey Craig to preserve the lead and get the ball to Randal Taylor in the ninth. Taylor then pitched a flawless ninth inning with a strikeout to earn his 10th save of the season. Taylor is currently tied with Jonathan Ortiz for the league lead in saves.
Asheville scored all of their runs in the sixth inning off Savannah starter Maikel Cleto (0-2). Beau Seabury and Everth Cabrera worked consecutive walks to begin the frame. Michael Mitchell then reached on a bunt attempt that was botched by the catcher Jordan Abruzzo. Brian Rike would then strikeout and Darin Holcomb flew out to set the stage for Jeffrey Cunningham. Cleto struck out nine and did not allow an earned run in the loss.
Cunningham hit a high fly ball to deep right that was overrun by the left fielder and turned into a bases clearing double. The three runs in the sixth were all the Tourists would managed, but it was just enough for Riordan and the Tourists.
The trip continues on Tuesday with RHP Connor Graham (4-2) on the mound for Asheville. Graham has won his last four decisions and will look to keep the Tourists in first place. The game can be heard on Flagship station WRES FM 100.7 or on the internet at www.theashevilletourists.com.
The Tourists return home from their road trip on Tuesday May 20th for their first meeting of the year with the Rome Braves at 7:05 p.m. It will be another Kids Eat Free Night, presented by Papa John's Pizza, and the first of three Goodwill Nights at the ballpark. Bring any three new or gently used clothing items to McCormick Field and receive a free general admission ticket for that night's game.
The Asheville Tourists are the Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Tickets are available by contacting the front office at (828)-258-0428 or on the website, www.theashevilletourists.com.
