Charleston, SC - Heading into Monday's match-up in Charleston against the RiverDogs, Felix Doubront had allowed just four earned runs through his first five starts of the season, spanning 25.2 innings.
But the South Atlantic League's second best hitting team nearly totaled that many runs in the southpaw's five inning outing, plating three earned runs off Doubront (4-1) en route to a 5-0 shutout victory in the series opener.
It didn't take Charleston long to get to Doubront, scoring a run in the bottom of the first as Jesus Montero doubled home Justin Snyder. Two innings later Carmen Angelini belted a solo homer, the first round tripper surrendered by Doubront all season. David Williams added to the Drive's troubles in the fourth as he doubled home a pair.
Offensively, the Drive had a tough time figuring out the RiverDogs pitching staff as three RiverDog hurlers combined on the five-hit shutout. Lance Pendleton (2-2) allowed just two hits and struckout six over 5.0 innings, but the right-hander did issue four walks. Unfortunately the Drive were unable to push across a run as they left 10 runners on base.
Ryan Kalish provided one of the few bright spots for the Drive, recording two hits and swiping his fifth base of the season. Ty Weeden, David Marks, and Kristopher Negron accounted for the Drive's other three hits in the loss.
Although it was too late, the Greenville bullpen provided solid relief as Bryce Cox and Felix Ventura combined on the final three innings of the game. Cox allowed an unearned run on one hit in 2.0 innings, fanning three. Ventura tossed a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
The Drive and RiverDogs continue their four-game series at Joseph P. Riley Park tomorrow with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Eammon Portice will toe the rubber for Greenville as Charleston counters with right-hander Noel Castillo.
After their eight-game road trip, the Drive return home to Fluor Field on Tuesday, May 20th. Even though the Drive are on the road, Fluor Field will still be rocking with exciting baseball, as the Furman Paladins and Tennessee Volunteers square off Tuesday, May 13th.
