RiverDogs clip Shorebirds, 6-3

CHARLESTON, SC - Brandon Braboy stymied Delmarva's bats with seven strikeouts while four Charleston batters each posted a pair of hits as the RiverDogs clipped the Shorebirds, 6-3, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 3,017 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Braboy (3-5) earned the win as the former University of Indianapolis standout tossed six full frames and allowed one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts while retiring the final nine batters he faced. The RiverDogs were led offensively by Abraham Almonte, Corban Joseph, Ray Kruml and Tommy Baldridge had two his apiece.

With the victory, the RiverDogs take the series opener and improve to 17-26 in the second half (56-57 overall) while the Shorebirds' second half record slips to 22-20 (59-53 overall).

The RiverDogs captured a 2-0 lead in the third when Baldridge lined a single and sprinted to third on a double by Jose Pirela. Almonte drove home Baldridge on a groundout while Pirela advanced to third. Joseph added a RBI single that plated Pirela for the game's second run.

Delmarva cut into Charleston's advantage in the fourth when Ron Welky reached on an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Elvin Polanco's sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.

Charleston extended its lead to 4-1 in the fourth when Taylor Grote drew a leadoff walk and scored on Kruml's RBI single that Delmarva right fielder Welty overthrew into the stands while Kruml scampered into third. Garrison Lassiter lined a RBI single to center to knock home Kruml.

The RiverDogs extended their advantage to 5-1 in the fifth when Almonte singled, stole second, and scooted to third on a groundout. Grote lined a RBI single that drove home Almonte.

Delmarva narrowed the gap in the eighth, 5-3, when Xavier Avery singled and advanced to second on Greg Miclat's walk. Welty smacked a RBI single that scored Avery while Miclat raced to third. Joseph Mahoney lined a RBI single for the inning's second tally.

The RiverDogs seized a 6-3 lead in the eighth when Melky Mesa cracked a leadoff single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a RBI single by Kruml.

Former U.S. Naval Academy standout Oliver Drake (7-7) suffered the defeat after he completed six frames and was charged with five earned runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out five RiverDogs.

The RiverDogs notched 12 base hits while the Shorebirds tallied eight with Mahoney leading the way with three.

Closer Jonathan Ortiz earned his ninth save of the season in as many attempts as he pitched the final 1.1 frames and fanned three of the six batters he faced.

Charleston sends right-hander Jairo Heredia (0-1, 2.77 ERA) to the bump for Game 2 of this four-game series while Delmarva counters with southpaw Chris Salberg (2-1, 3.65 ERA) with first pitch set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
