Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads dropped their Monday night contest against the West Virginia Power, 9-3, before 959 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium. Both RF Jared Bolden and SS Andres James hit their first homers of the season for the Crawdads, while C Tony Sanchez collected three hits, including a homer, drove in three RBIs and scored four runs for West Virginia.
The Power (22-18, 49-61) got out in front with a run against RHP Joe Wieland (3-4) in the top of the second inning and added two more in the top of the fourth to move ahead, 3-0. With one out in the top of the fifth, Sanchez hit a two-run homer, stretching the Power lead to five runs and concluding the evening for Wieland. LHP Yoon-Hee Nam took over on the mound and got out of the frame with no further damage done.
The Crawdads (21-22, 54-58) struck for a run against RHP Aaron Pribanic (1-1) in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the deficit to four runs. With one away in the inning, Bolden belted a ball over the right-center field wall for his first bomb of the campaign to make it 5-1.
West Virginia extended the lead to six runs in the top of the seventh with a couple of runs against Nam. Sanchez sparked a two-out rally with a double, before 1B Kyle Morgan hit an RBI double of his own to plate the catcher. Morgan then scored on an RBI single by LF Quincy Latimore to put the Power ahead, 7-1.
RHP Corey Ragsdale tossed a scoreless top of the eighth inning, before the Crawdads bats again cut the West Virginia lead down to four runs in the bottom of the frame. James opened the inning with a solo shot over the left field wall off of RHP Gabriel Alvarado. 2B Mike Hollander got on later in the inning with a one-out walk, and scored all the way from first base on a two-out RBI double by C Doug Hogan, making it 7-3.
The Power responded yet again, stretching the lead back to six runs with two tallies in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Sanchez and an RBI fielder's choice by 3B Jeremy Farrell. Alvarado then retook the mound for a scoreless bottom of the ninth to close the door on the Crawdads in the 9-3 win for the Power. Wieland was tagged with the loss for Hickory, while Pribanic earned the win and Alvarado registered the save for West Virginia.
