CHARLESTON, S.C. - Left-hander Jhonathan Diaz led a dominant pitching performance by the Greenville Drive and got plenty of offensive support from third baseman Tanner Nishioka, as the Boston Red Sox affiliate shut out the Charleston RiverDogs, 6-0, allowing three hits in Thursday night's four-game series opener in front of 5,667 at Joe Riley Park.

Diaz (10-8) became the third 10-game winner in the South Atlantic League by allowing Charleston's three hits over his six scoreless frames. The RiverDogs (58-67, 25-32) loaded the bases against the Venezuela-born hurler in the fourth inning but a strikeout and groundout kept the Dogs off the board.

Charleston's starter Janson Junk (6-5) couldn't match the Greenville (58-70, 33-26) lefty's outing, allowing the first four Drive runs in his five innings. Third baseman Tanner Nishioka deposited a 1-2 pitch from Junk over the left centerfield fence for the game's first two runs in the fourth. Greenville added a pair in the following inning before catcher Jerry Seitz caught Pedro Castellanos attempting to steal second and Junk left Nishioka stranded in scoring position.

Nishioka finished the game a triple shy of the cycle. The Hawaii native tagged his second double in the seventh inning and tried to stretch it into three bases but was thrown out to end the inning. The 23-year-old did not get another plate appearance but is 13-for-17 over his last four games at The Joe, including five extra-base hits, and is hitting .422 in 11 games against Charleston.

Alexander Vargas piggybacked Junk's outing by allowing two runs (one earned) in the final four innings. The right-hander dealt a perfect sixth but a leadoff home run in the seventh from right fielder Jarren Duran extended Greenville's lead to five.

First baseman Dermis Garcia was hit by a pair of pitches from Jhonathan Diaz but finished 0-for-2 and had his 10-game hitting streak snapped.

With the shutout defeat, Charleston is 5-12 in such contests and are 11-9 in games separated by five or more runs.

Ballpark Fun

The RiverDogs welcomed students from the College of Charleston and The Citadel for the final Budweiser Thirsty Thursday of the season. Fans in the Budweiser Ashley View Pub enjoyed dollar beers and let loose to the tracks of DJ Natty Heavy.
