Legends Can't Close Gap in Ninth; Fall 3-2 to Hagerstown

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) - The Lexington Legends welcomed in the Hagerstown Suns for game one of a four-game series. Despite an early lead, the Suns outlasted the Legends 3-2. Lexington remains in first place of the Southern Division and are 3.0 games ahead of the Greenville Drive and Asheville Tourists.

The Legends plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brewer Hicklen singled to left field. He then stole second base and swiped third base. Manny Olloque then smacked an RBI double off the right centerfield wall and the Legends led, 1-0.

The Suns answered in the top of the fifth inning. Alex Dunlap reached on a throwing error by Jeison Guzman then moved to second when Cameron Esthay drew a walk. Nick Choruby then singled him home and the game was tied, 1-1.

Hagerstown took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Armond Upshaw led off with a single left field, then advanced to third on a double by Cole Freeman. Jake Scudder then singled home Upshaw while moving Freeman to third. Anderson Franco then hit a sacrifice fly to right field and the Suns led 3-1.

Lexington attempted to make their comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. Back-to-back singles by Olloque and Cristian Perez put runners at first and second for the Legends. Marten Gasparini then loaded the bases when the Suns committed a fielding error. Guzman then grounded out to the second baseman, while Olloque scored pulling the Legends within one run. Kyle Isbel then grounded out to the second baseman to end the ballgame.

Frankie Bartow was awarded the win for the Suns tossing 3.0 innings of relief allowing one run on four hits while striking out two. Garrett Davila was given the loss for the Legends pitching 4.0 innings of relief allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out five. Lexington's starter, Jackson Kowar, pitched three perfect innings with six strikeouts.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. The Legends will send LHP Daniel Lynch (5-0, 1.32 ERA) to face Hagerstown's LHP Tim Cate (2-3, 4.65 ERA). The Legends are proud to once again host Hispanic Heritage Night on Friday, August 24 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Hispanic Heritage Night is proudly presented by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Human Rights Commission, and throughout the game all fans will see, hear, taste and feel the #stachetastic rich culture of our local Hispanic community. We will have music on the plaza, courtesy of Pepsi, during our pregame festivities along with local Hispanic cuisine available for purchase! Also during the game, the Legends players will be wearing Legends-branded Sugar Mustache Skull Caps specially designed for Hispanic Heritage Night and presented by LFUCHRC! Thanks to the Human Rights Campaign, the Legends will also be selling the extremely popular Sugar Mustache Skull hat in the Stache Shoppe. Following the final out, fireworks will conclude the night!
