River Riders Sweep Doughboys 9-2

ELIZABETHTON, TN --- The River Riders defeated the Johnson City Doughboys 9-2 in Elizabethton at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark. River Riders (13-10) second baseman John Montes (3) (UCF), Eli Young (1) (Gateway), and Johnathan Soto (1) (Rogers State) hit home runs in the victory.

E-Town sent all nine to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and scored six runs. Right fielder Garrison Berkley (TCU) scored left fielder DJ Sullivan (Florence-Darlington Tech) and Soto on a single to centerfield. Designated hitter Sam Thompson (TCU) singled in shortstop Marcus Brown (Oklahoma State University). Catcher Reagan Guthrie (Regis) brought Berkley home on a sacrifice fly to right. Montes hit his team-leading third home run 423 feet to right field, 6-0 Elizabethton.

In the top of the third, the Doughboys (8-13-1) scored one run on a bases-loaded walk by shortstop Steven Ondina (Florida International).

With two outs in the bottom of the third Young hit his first home run of the season 369 feet, scoring Guthrie and giving the River Riders an 8-1 lead.

E-Town scored their final run in the bottom of the fourth when Soto hit a lead-off home run to left-centerfield 388 feet.

Johnson City scored their second and final run in the top of the sixth by catcher Brady Cotton (Marietta) single to score third baseman Ashton King (East Tennessee State).

The River Rivers will continue their four-game homestand and host the Princeton WhistlePigs tomorrow at 7. Thursday is Thirsty Thursday at NCCU Ballpark, fans can enjoy beer specials all evening with discounted brat prices as well.
