Greeneville Flyboys News Release
BURLINGTON - A three-run top of the first inning would be the highlight of the night for Greeneville as the Flyboys dropped a 4-3 decision against the Burlington Sock Puppets on Thursday at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
Greeneville (14-10) drops into a tie for first place in the Appalachian League West Division after the Bristol State Liners were idle due to their game being postponed due to rain. The Flyboys stranded 10 runners on base in the contest, while Burlington turned four double plays on the night.
The Flyboys opened the contest with a trio of runs in the top of the first inning as Eddie Micheletti worked a walk with the bases loaded to give Greeneville a 1-0 advantage. Jac Croom followed with a single into right field that allowed Trevor Austin and Tayler Aguilar to score and increase the lead to 3-0. The inning would come to an end as Micheletti was tagged out trying to advance to third on the play.
Burlington answered with a run against Greeneville starter Luke Russo in the bottom of the frame and would load the bases after trimming the deficit to 3-1. Russo worked out of trouble with a strikeout and a groundout to second base. The Sock Puppets rallied to knot the score in the bottom of the second inning with a run-scoring single followed by a sacrifice fly to left field.
The best opportunity for Greeneville to retake the lead would come in the top of the third inning as Aguilar, Emanuel Dean, and Micheletti all walked to load the bases with no outs. Burlington traded one play for two outs as Croom hit a line drive to second that allowed Dean to be doubled-off at second. A strikeout ended the inning and stranded a pair of runners on base for the Flyboys.
The Sock Puppets would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as D'Andre Smith delivered a two-out single to center field as Isaiah Winikur scored from third to make it 4-3. Greeneville reliever Cameron Wagoner worked out of the inning without any further damage following a strikeout.
Greeneville's final opportunity to rally came in the top of the ninth inning as a fielding error with one out allowed the potential tying run to reach base for the Flyboys. A single from Austin followed by a walk from Aguilar loaded the bases for Greeneville. Dean sent a laser to right field but the ball would hang in the air long enough for the right fielder to make a play and secure the 4-3 victory for the Sock Puppets.
The Flyboys wrap up their season series against the Sock Puppets on Friday night with a 7 p.m. first pitch. Greeneville heads to Johnson City on Saturday night before returning to Pioneer Park to host the Doughboys on Sunday, July 4th at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Flyboys ticket office at 423-609-7400.
