Greeneville Flyboys News Release
PULASKI - Three Greeneville pitchers combined to record 15 strikeouts as the Flyboys recorded their second straight shutout with a 2-0 victory against Pulaski on Tuesday night at Historic Calfee Park.
Greeneville (14-8) remains at the top of the Appalachian League West Division standings and holds a 1.5 game lead over the Bristol State Liners. Bristol defeated Danville on Tuesday night to keep pace with the Flyboys for the top spot.
Pitching controlled the early portion of the contest for both sides as Greeneville starter Bryce Mayer retired each of the first nine batters that he faced on the night. Mayer fanned six of those nine batters while scattering a flyball, pop up, and a groundout.
Greeneville opened the scoring against the River Turtles in the top of the fourth inning as Jonathan Hogart delivered a triple into right field to lead off the inning. Following a two-out walk to Emanuel Dean in the frame, Eddie Micheletti tallied a single that would be knocked down by the second baseman as Hogart scored to make it 1-0.
The River Turtles put a pair of runners on base against Mayer in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single and one-out walk. Mayer stayed cool under pressure and battled through the frame to record three strikeouts and strand both runners on base to head to the fifth inning.
Daylen Reyes opened the top of the seventh inning with a single for the Flyboys and later moved into scoring position following a wild pitch. Greeneville added to its advantage as Jac Croom dropped down a bunt that the River Turtles would field. The throw would get away from the first baseman and allowed Reyes to score on the play to make it 2-0.
The Greeneville bullpen continued what Mayer started as Austin Troesser fanned five batters through three innings of relief and scattered a pair of hits, while Carter Nowak recorded his first save of the season after tossing a pair of scoreless frames. Pulaski had a pair of chances to rally with the potential tying run at the plate, but a 4-6-3 double play lead to the first two outs of the ninth. Nowak would get a pop-up in the infield to secure the 2-0 victory and second straight shutout for the Flyboys.
Croom finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate for Greeneville, while Reyes, Micheletti, Hogart, Tayler Aguilar and Homer Bush, Jr. each tallied a hit for the Flyboys in the winning effort.
The Flyboys and River Turtles will battle again on Wednesday, June 30, at Calfee Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Greeneville visits Burlington for a pair of games followed by a Saturday night contest against Johnson City before returning to Pioneer Park to host the Doughboys on Sunday, July 4, at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Flyboys ticket office at 423-609-7400.
