River Riders Drop Game One to the State Liners 3-2

BRISTOL, TN - The Elizabethton River Riders lost game one 3-2 in Bristol against the State Liners at Boyce Cox Field. Elizabethton (14-12) has scored seven runs while trailing in the final half of an inning.

The River Riders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly out by first baseman Chase Adkison (Oklahoma State University) to score right fielder Mario Zabala (Florida International) from third.

The State Liners (15-9) tied the game in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch by River Rider starter LHP Andy Quintana (St.Thomas).

In the top of the fifth, Zabala singled on a 3-0 count to break up the no-hit bid by Bristol's pitching staff.

In the bottom of the fifth, shortstop Matthew Golda (Oklahoma State University) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score first baseman Tate Kight (Georgia Gwinnett) from third.

In the top of the ninth, Adkison singled to lead off the inning. Designated hitter Sam Thompson (TCU) followed with a single, and with one out, third baseman Robin Fernandez (St.Thomas) loaded the bases with a single of his own. Catcher Reagan Guthrie (Regis) was hit by a pitch and scored Adkison to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth right fielder Jermaine White (St.Johns) was hit by a pitch. White scored after three consecutive wild pitches by RHP Brenden Heiss (Southeastern).

The River Riders will look to split the home and two-game series at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark, first pitch is at 7. This Sunday is the only nine-inning Sunday for the Appalachian League, and at NCCU Ballpark, fans can expect a postgame firework extravaganza.
