Kingsport Axmen News Release
BLUEFIELD, WV - Despite Hunter Fitz-Gerald's third home run in the last four games, the Kingsport Axmen fell to the Bluefield Ridge Runners, 10-2, Saturday night at Bowen Field.
Fitz-Gerald turned on a 1-0 inside fastball and crushed a no-doubter over the rightfield fence to put the Axmen (11-15) on the board in the fourth. After Bluefield (12-14) pushed across five runs in the first three frames, Fitz-Gerald's 366-foot blast sparked the visitors.
Axmen centerfielder JonJon Berring added to Kingsport's tally with an RBI groundout one inning later, trimming the deficit to 5-2.
In both the fifth and sixth innings, the Axmen brought the tying run to the plate but the Ridge Runners' pitching staff kept Kingsport off the board.
Bluefield padded its lead, tacking on a run in the seventh and four in the eighth to claim the first game of the home-and-home series.
Right-handers Patrick Strawbridge and Blake Sodersten shined out of Kingsport's bullpen, combining to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings. The duo teamed up for three strikeouts and issued only one walk.
The Axmen return to Hunter Wright Stadium at 7 p.m. Sunday, looking to split the two-game set with the Ridge Runners. Following the conclusion of the game, Kingsport is hosting a Fireworks Extravaganza presented by Ingles.
