Bristol Tops Johnson City, 20-14
July 3, 2021 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Johnson City Doughboys News Release
Johnson City nearly erased a 13-run deficit, but fell short on the road in Bristol, losing 20-14 to the State-Liners in one of the wildest contests of the summer.
The Doughboys (8-15-1) trailed 14-1 going into the sixth inning, but roared to life on offense with a furious stretch of eleven runs in the next three frames to cut it to a 15-12 deficit heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Held to just one hit through the first five innings, Johnson City picked up eleven knocks in the next three frames and had runners on first and second base with nobody out in the eighth inning trailing by three runs.
However, Bristol (14-9) got three straight strikeouts of Doughboy hitters and then tacked on five runs in the home half of the same inning to build enough cushion to withstand two more ninth inning runs from Johnson City, one on a groundout from Joe Vetrano and the other on a double from Jaxson Crull.
The game set records in the Appalachian League this summer for: most runs by a single team (20), most combined runs (34), and most combined walks (23).
Johnson City outhit Bristol 13-10 but committed six errors to their opponent's zero. In addition to the twelve walks issued by Johnson City pitchers, there were also five hit batsmen.
The result keeps Bristol atop the West Division standings, and keeps Johnson City in fifth place.
Connor James had his best game as a Doughboy, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, and Crull finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two walks. Vetrano, Ashton King, and Cade Sumbler picked up two hits apiece.
Garrett Simmons was a bright spot out of the Johnson City bullpen, tossing two shutout innings with five strikeouts and no hits allowed.
Johnson City returns home on Saturday night to face the Greeneville Flyboys at TVA Credit Union Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
