Doughboys Drop Fifth Straight

Johnson City Doughboys News Release

Johnson City lost their fifth straight game on Saturday night, falling 7-2 to Greeneville.

TVA Credit Union Ballpark, filled up with 3,521 loud fans, wasn't enough of a home field advantage for the Doughboys to overcome some dominant pitching from the visiting Flyboys, who held Johnson City (8-16-1) to just four hits.

Greeneville (15-10-1) currently leads the Appalachian League in ERA (3.84), strikeouts (290), and fewest walks allowed (94).

The Flyboys led 4-0 in the fifth inning, but Johnson City proceeded to load the bases on starter Will Saxton in the home half before Connor James came through in the clutch with a single to right field that scored both Jaxson Crull and Cade Sumbler.

With the margin at 4-2 still in favor of Greeneville, the game carried on with pitchers from both sides getting outs at an efficient rate.

Then, in the eighth, the Flyboys' Derek Tenney hit a two-run homer over the right field fence off of rock-strong reliever Andrew Ronne to push the Greeneville advantage to 6-2. The Flyboys added another insurance run in the ninth and had Cal Lambert get the last three outs for Greeneville's fifteenth win of the season.

Johnson City starter Trevor Hinkel scattered four hits across four innings with four total runs allowed and just one earned run, with a season-high seven strikeouts. Miguel Fulgencio replaced him out of the bullpen and recorded two innings with just one run allowed and four strikeouts. Cade Pilchard then pitched a scoreless seventh to keep the game within two runs for Johnson City.

Johnson City will look for some measure of revenge when they travel to Greeneville on Sunday for a Fourth of July contest at Pioneer Park. The nine-inning game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
