Sacramento River Cats News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Five different River Cats players logged two hits apiece, helping Sacramento beat the host Fresno Grizzlies by a score of 6-4 on Monday night at Chukchansi Park.
The two squads were neck-and-neck though five innings, taking a 3-3 game into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Grizzlies took a 4-3 lead when Nick Noonan drove in Gary Brown on a sacrifice fly to right field. The lead didn't last long, however, as the River Cats plated two in the top of the seventh inning on RBI-singles from Jake Elmore and Andy Parrino.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the River Cats tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Shane Peterson singled-home Elmore, who doubled two batters earlier. Sacramento manager Steve Scarsone then called upon Evan Scribner in the bottom of the ninth, who gave up one hit in one scoreless inning for his team-leading 13th save of the year.
Elmore finished 2-for-5 with two runs, an RBI, a steal, and a double, Exposition went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, and two doubles, and Nick Buss finished 1-for-5 with two RBI. The win was awarded to Paul Smyth, who allowed one unearned run in 1.2 innings of work with one strikeout to move to 4-2 on the year. Austin House notched his first career Triple-A hold with two shutout innings of relief.
The loss was charged to Chris Heston, who gave up five earned runs on nine this and one walk with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. Marco Scutaro-rehabbing with the Grizzlies-went 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and two strikeouts. Adam Duvall went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two doubles, while Darren Ford went 2-for-4 with a steal.
Game two of the series will see River Cats righty Zach Neal (2-3, 4.68 ERA) take on Sacramento State alum Mitch Lively (5-4, 5.22 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Chukchansi Park.
Sacramento returns home on Friday, July 11, at 7:05 p.m. when the Aces visit Raley Field for the first time this season in a three-game set that ends just before the 2014 All-Star break.
