ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced Tuesday that they have recalled RHP Phil Irwin from the Round Rock Express. Irwin is scheduled to start for the Rangers Tuesday night as they play the Houston Astros in Arlington.

Irwin was claimed off waivers by Texas in late May and optioned to Round Rock. After appearing out of the bullpen in his Express debut, Irwin joined the E-Train rotation on June 3. In six starts, the right-hander went 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA (6 ER/32.1 IP) and 37 strikeouts. As a starter, he limited opposing hitters to a .200 (26-for-117) average against, while turning in three quality starts. Irwin struck out a career-high 11 batters over seven shutout innings on June 24 to defeat the Fresno Grizzlies. On July 1, in his last start with the Express, he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning at New Orleans.

Prior to being claimed by Texas, the Memphis, Tennessee native made 10 appearances (two starts) for the Indianapolis Indians, Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, going 1-2 with an 8.72 ERA (21 ER/21.2 IP) and 18 strikeouts.

Tuesday will be Irwin's second career major league appearance as he debuted with Pittsburgh on April 14, 2013. In 4.2 innings against the Cincinnati Reds, he allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits, striking out four and walking four in a no decision.

Irwin, 27, was selected by the Pirates in the 21st round of the 2009 first-year player draft out of the University of Mississippi. In three seasons in Oxford, he helped the Rebels to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2009 Southeastern Conference Championship.
