Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. - In their first game after the All-Star break, the River Cats lost to the visiting Las Vegas 51s on Thursday night at Raley Field by a score of 6-3.
The 51s plated three runs in the first two innings, twice on a first-inning, two-run single from catcher Yan Gomes, and once in the second when Anthony Gose singled-home Chris Woodward.
Sacramento countered with a Grant Green RBI-single to left-center field in the third, scoring Adam Rosales who drew a one-out walk earlier in the frame. The Cats added another run when Rosales drove in Kila Ka'aihue with a single of his own, bringing the score to 3-2 after four innings. Las Vegas then extended its lead with runs in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings, giving them a 6-2 lead entering the bottom of the ninth.
Sacramento made things interesting, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Ka'aihue drew a bases-loaded walk, cutting the lead to three and bringing Michael Taylor to the plate, representing the winning run. Taylor hit a chopper up the middle and was beat to the bag by a good defensive play from 51s shortstop Mike McCoy, sealing the 6-3 Las Vegas victory.
River Cats starter Tyson Ross lasted three innings, giving up three runs-two earned-with five strikeouts and six walks for the loss. Travis Banwart gave up one earned run with five strikeouts in three innings of relief. The River Cats pitching staff walked a season-high 12 batters, and struck out 13.
Sacramento collected six hits in total, including a 2-for-5 performance from Green. Kila Ka'aihue failed to record a hit, but drew two walks, and has now reached base safely in18-of-19 games played with the River Cats this season.
The loss brings the River Cats' record to 55-37 on the season, putting them 3.5 games ahead of the 51s for first place in the division.
Game two of the four-game set will begin at 7:05 on Toyota Family Value Friday. Professional baseball's strikeout-leader, Dan Straily (3-1, 1.04 ERA), will start against 51s righty Shawn Hill (1-0, 6.35 ERA) during a promotion-packed night at Raley Field, featuring Wine in the Park and Hollywood Night.
