Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Starting pitcher Fernando Nieve authored 6.0 scoreless frames to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes (53-39) to a 7-0 win over the Nashville Sounds (40-52) Friday night at Greer Stadium. Albuquerque starts its post-All-Star Break portion of the schedule with its fifth shutout and has beaten the Sounds four straight times.

Nieve (5-6) was in complete control throughout the contest, allowing just four hits and two walks while fanning six to earn wins in back-to-back starts for the first time this season. From the fourth to the sixth, Nieve retired eight of 10 batters faced en route to his fifth victory of the season. Only two Sounds hitters reached second the entire night and Isotopes pitchers yielded just seven Nashville base runners.

With its starter dominating, Albuquerque wasted no time giving him some run support, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the second. After Matt Angle reached on a bunt base hit, Brian Cavazos-Galvez hammered a two-run shot to left that put the "˜Topes on top 2-0.

Angle helped increase the advantage in the fifth with a solo blast to right to extend Albuquerque's lead to 3-0.

The Isotopes put the game away in the fifth, erupting for four runs, every one of them coming with two outs. After Alex Castellanos drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Sounds starter Seth McClung, Josh Fields extended his current hitting streak to nine with an RBI single up the middle to put Albuquerque ahead 4-0. Jerry Sands then walked and Tim Federowicz reached on an infield hit, loading the bases. A second wild pitch from McClung plated Fields and increased the lead to 5-0 while setting up Angle, who smashed a single to right, scoring Sands and Federowicz to give the Isotopes a 7-0 cushion. Angle finished the night 3-for-4 with a season-high three RBI.

Seven runs was plenty for the "˜Topes relief corps, as Michael Antonini, Cole St. Clair, and Angel Guzman each delivered a scoreless inning apiece to seal the 7-0 Isotopes win.

Albuquerque will meet the Sounds in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 5:05 PM MT with right-hander Will Savage (10-3, 5.34) taking the mound for the Isotopes in game one against Sounds righty Claudio Vargas (3-1, 4.89). The night-cap features right-handed reliever Blake Johnson (0-0, 6.39) making his first start of the season while taking on Nashville righty Donovan Hand (1-0, 2.79).

After a quick trip to Nashville, the "˜Topes are back home on Monday for an eight-game homestand packed with excitement, including a replica jersey giveaway, fireworks, and the always popular Dukes Retro Night. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com .
