TACOMA, Wash. -- The Rainiers pitching staff turned in a stifling performance as Tacoma topped the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 5-1 in the series opener between the two clubs at Cheney Stadium on Thursday.

Starter Blake Beavan (4-0) led the charge for Tacoma from the mound, allowing just two hits over seven scoreless innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out three on the way to sealing his fourth win over his last five starts.

Reliever Brian Moran struck out three over one shutout inning in the eighth before right-hander Chance Ruffin surrendered an unearned run to the Sky Sox in the ninth.

At the plate, catcher Guillermo Quiroz accounted for Tacoma's first run of the series after driving in Carlos Triunfel from second with a two-out single to left field.

Triunfel added an insurance run for the Rainiers with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The blast was the infielder's eighth this season, equaling his career high set over 108 games with Single-A High Desert in 2008.

Vinnie Catricala produced his eighth RBI over his last eight games when he cleared the way for shortstop Nick Franklin to score on a force out in the sixth inning.

Darren Ford stretched Tacoma's 3-0 lead to four runs with a solo home run in the seventh - the first of his 2012 campaign. Franklin's RBI-single added a fifth and final run two outs later in the frame.

Ford was one of four Rainiers players to tally a two-hit effort as Tacoma combined to collect 11 hits on Thursday. The outfielder has now hit safely in 19 of his first 20 games with 12 multi-hit outings, and is currently riding a career-long 15-game hitting streak.

The Rainiers (39-51) host the second leg of the club's four-game series with the Sky Sox (45-45) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, July 13. Fresh off an appearance in the All-Star Futures Game, Mariners top pitching prospect Danny Hultzen (1-1, 5.25) is slated to take the mound for Tacoma in the outing. Right-hander Alex White (1-4, 4.01) will get the start for Colorado Springs.
