Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Tyler Lyons scattered three hits over seven shutout innings as the Memphis Redbirds blanked the Round Rock Express 5-0 in Friday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (39-54) have lost three straight and eight of their last nine. The Redbirds (34-59) won consecutive games for the first time since June 29-30. Memphis leads the series 2-0; the season series is tied 5-5.
Memphis blanked Round Rock for the second straight night. It marked the first time Round Rock was shutout in consecutive games since June 16-17, 2011, and the first time the Express were shutout in consecutive home games since June 13-14, 2009. Round Rock has not scored in 21 consecutive innings at The Dell Diamond, and the Express have scored in only two of their last 36 innings at home. It also marked the 10th straight home game in which the Express scored four or fewer runs.
The Redbirds scored three runs on four consecutive two-out hits in the second. Adron Chambers had a two-run single and later scored on Ryan Jackson's RBI single. Zack Cox doubled with two outs in the third, and Pete Kozma followed with an RBI single. Cox capped the scoring with a leadoff homer in the ninth.
Lyons (1-4) earned his first career Triple-A win. He walked two and struck out four. Lyons retired each of the first eight batters he faced before Greg Miclat's two-out single in the third. John Gaub, who was an Express member for two weeks earlier this season, pitched a scoreless eighth, and Jess Todd worked around a leadoff walk and a one-out single for a scoreless ninth.
Express starter Chad Bell (2-2) shouldered the loss; he allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings with two strikeouts. Ross Wolf worked two perfect innings with one strikeout. Joe Ortiz retired three straight after surrendering Cox's leadoff homer in the ninth.
Round Rock's best scoring chance was in the fifth. Brad Nelson drew a two-out walk, and Joey Butler followed with a double to center. Nelson likely would have scored on the hit; however, the ball bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double, forcing Nelson to stop at third. Yangervis Solarte followed with a groundout.
Nelson doubled to open the seventh and walked to open the ninth but was stranded at second both times. Miclat and Julio Borbon opened the eighth with consecutive singles, but a double play and a groundout quelled the threat.
Miclat (2-for-3) had Round Rock's lone multiple-hit game; he has hit safely in six of his last seven games, going 10-for-19 in that time. Borbon and Butler both extended hitting streaks to six games; Borbon has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games.
Chambers and Cox both had two-hit efforts for Memphis.
Round Rock and Memphis continue their four-game series Saturday with a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch. Right-hander Justin Grimm (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his Triple-A debut for the Express; he was 8-3 with a 1.80 ERA in 14 starts at Double-A Frisco and 1-1 in two starts and a relief appearance with the Rangers. Right-hander Shelby Miller (4-8, 6.17 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Redbirds.
