Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Josh Horton went 2-for-3 with a run, two RBIs, and his first home run of the season, but the River Cats ultimately lost to the Las Vegas 51s by a score of 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Raley Field.
Right-hander Jesse Chavez (2-2) got the start and threw well, limiting Las Vegas to two runs through five innings. After giving up a third run in the top of the sixth on a Zach Lutz sacrifice fly, Chavez came back out for the seventh. He retired the first two batters on a groundout and a fly out before giving up a single to Omar Quintanilla. After the base hit, lefty Pedro Figueroa came on in relief, walking the first batter he faced, then giving up a three-run home run to former River Cat, Collin Cowgill.
In the bottom of the seventh, Horton came to the plate with a man on first, driving a 3-2 pitch off the right-field foul pole for his first home run, cutting the Las Vegas lead to 6-2. The River Cats were unable to push another man across the plate, ultimately losing, 6-2.
Chavez allowed eight hits, four runs-two earned-and zero walks with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings for the loss. Figueroa gave up two earned in 1.1 innings, while Darren Byrd threw a scoreless ninth inning. Michael Choice and Ryan Ortiz had two hits apiece, while Horton moved his batting average to .245 on the year.
The win went to New York Mets top-prospect Zack Wheeler (2-1), who allowed just three hits and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings of work. Cowgill went 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs, a home run and a strikeout.
The fourth and final game of the series is set for Throwback Monday presented by Cache Creek at 7:05 p.m. when A's top-prospect Sonny Gray (3-1, 2.61 ERA) squares off against Las Vegas righty Carlos Torres (1-2, 5.25 ERA) at Raley Field.
