Sacramento River Cats News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - Michael Choice went 3-for-4 with two doubles, but it wasn't enough as the River Cats were shut out for the eighth time this season, falling 4-0 to the Tacoma Rainiers, Saturday night at Cheney Stadium, keeping Sacramento out of the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Tacoma capitalized on three Sacramento errors to go up 3-0 over the River Cats, and a home run in the eighth inning by Tacoma's Leury Bonilla sealed the Rainiers' 4-0 win in game two of their final regular series.

Choice finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, while catcher Derek Norris recorded the only other River Cats hit on Saturday night.

Sacramento right-hander Bruce Billings dropped his third straight contest, as he struck out two and walked five. He gave up one earned run in his fine-inning appearance.

Reliever Evan Scribner tallied three strikeouts in one scoreless inning of relief, while Paul Smyth and Pat Neshek had one strikeout and two walks. Neshek struck out two and gave up two unearned runs off two hits in the ninth inning.

Tacoma's right-hander Blake Beavan struck out seven and walked two, while giving up three hits in seven innings pitched to give the River Cats their eighth shutout of the season.

The River Cats will send righty Travis Banwart (10-5, 4.03 ERA) to the mound tomorrow in Tacoma in game three of their final series of the regular season. He faces lefty James Paxton (8-11, 4.39 ERA) of Tacoma.
