Las Vegas wins over Tucson
September 1, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Padres News Release
Tucson's Brandon Allen homered twice Saturday, but the Las Vegas 51s scored four two-out runs from the fifth inning on to defeat the Padres 8-6 at Cashman Field. The win for the 51s came on the same day they clinched the Pacific Southern Division title because of Sacramento's loss.
Ruben Tejada put the 51s ahead early with a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the first. Allen smacked a three-run homer to right field in the third to give the Padres a 3-1 lead. Las Vegas answered in the bottom third with two runs on Zach Lutz's RBI triple and Eric Campbell's RBI single to tie the score at three.
Francisco Pena launched his ninth home run of the year to lead off the bottom of the fourth, putting the 51s back in front. Allen's second home run of the game went to the same location as his first homer to hand the Padres a 5-4 lead. Allen now has 17 home runs on the season, the most on the team. Las Vegas responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on Jamie Hoffmann's double. Dustin Lawley's pinch-hit, two-run single in the seventh extended the 51s lead to 8-5. Gregorio Petit completed a four-hit night with a solo home run in the ninth, but Cory Wade was able to close out the inning for his first save with Las Vegas.
Reliever Sean Henn earned his third win, while Tucson starter Keyvius Sampson was charged with his third loss. Sampson surrendered six runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Dean Anna went 1-for-5 at the plate to drop his league-leading average to .333, five points higher than Fresno's Kensuke Tanaka and Salt Lake's Efren Navarro.
