Iowa Cubs News Release
Nashville, TN - The Nashville Sounds (56-86) beat the Iowa Cubs (65-77) 7-2 at Greer Stadium tonight in a game that featured four errors, two ejections, two passed balls, and a runner called out for improper baserunning. The Sounds lead this series 2-0 and have won five straight games at home against the Cubs this year. The Cubs lead the season series 8-6.
The ejections came first in the top of the second inning. Tim Torres was called out on strikes and argued the call. After a short dispute, he disappeared into the first base dugout. Before the next batter could dig in, home plate umpire Tripp Gibson motioned towards the Cubs' dugout that he had heard enough, and a moment later signaled an ejection. Torres came back out to plead his case before Cubs' manager Marty Pevey walked down from the third base coach's box and entered the argument. Pevey was also ejected. It was Pevey's eighth ejection of the season and the pair pushed the team total to 22. Going back to 2005, the Cubs' highest total of ejections in a season had been 11 in 2011.
The Sounds struck first on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning when Blake Davis hit a two-run homer off Cubs' starter Yoanner Negrin. The next batter hit a bouncing ball to first base and Negrin (4-7) broke to cover the bag. Brad Nelson made the play unassisted, but Negrin's calf cramped up and he limped back towards the mound. The muscle wouldn't release and Negrin had to come out of the game. Jeff Antigua took over and allowed two runs (one earned) in 3.1 innings in relief. The Sounds added an unearned run in the fourth when Josh Prince got to third base due to a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sounds' starter Jimmy Nelson. Eugenio Velez had a bunt single and scored on a two-out double by Hunter Morris in the fifth.
Nelson (6-4) was tough on the Cubs, allowing two unearned runs in 5.2 innings while tying a season-high with 10 strikeouts. In the top of the third, Dave Sappelt singled, went to second on a wild pitch, caught Nelson off-guard when he took off for third, and scored when Nelson threw the ball in to the Sounds' bullpen trying to throw him out. In the top of the sixth, Nelson walked Jae-Hoon Ha and Edgar Gonzalez, they pulled off a double steal to get to second and third, and Ha scored on a passed ball.
The Sounds added two more runs against Marcos Mateo in the sixth. With runners on second and third, Kentrail Davis singled to drive in one run. Velez followed with a fly ball into left-center field. Ha made a running catch and saw Davis had run all the way to second base. Ha threw to first and the ball hit Davis as he arrived at the base. With the ball on the ground, Blake Lalli came in to score from third. The Cubs protested that Davis had rounded second, but didn't retouch the base before going back to first. The umpires conferenced and ruled that Davis was out for failing to retouch second, but indicated that Lalli's run would count. Velez was credited with a sacrifice fly. The Sounds added their final run in the seventh. With runners on second and third, Prince hit a ground ball to third. Robinzon Diaz broke for the plate, stopped when Mike Olt fielded the ball cleanly, but then scored when Olt's throw to the plate skipped to the screen for an error.
The Cubs and Sounds continue this series tomorrow night at 6:35 at Greer Stadium. RH Justin Grimm (3-3, 4.50) will start for the Cubs against LH Zack Kroenke (5-16, 4.77) for the Sounds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:15.
